About us
Earthwork Landscape Architects is a practice based in Christchurch, New Zealand with a strong commitment to its client’s needs and the landscape, a clear philosophy and a history of top quality project delivery.
The practice grew out of a rural location where it expanded its expertise in site planning and public design to a broad range of professional engagement. These original strengths in logical, well planned design and a commitment to the natural environment have been retained in our work.
The company now employs seven people, works throughout the South Island of New Zealand and overseas, across commercial, public and private projects. The practice has identified its core skills and these form the backbone of the multidisciplinary work that is now typically carried out. These core skills are site planning, landscape identity, communication and project delivery.
Core Skills
Site Planning
The practice’s beginnings in rural and public work and the associated emphasis on “whole of site” solutions has developed into a broader range of applications. This is based on a clear understanding of both the site and the design brief and applies rigorous logic in creating and collaborating on a comprehensive site solution. The practice retains close architectural
connections and often is employed before an architect. These skills are also used in association with engineering, ecology, urban design and planning.
Landscape Identity
The landscape has many aspects but we have found that one of the best ways to satisfy both our clients’ requirements and the landscape is to concentrate on finding unique and creative identities for each of our projects. This has commercial benefits for projects competing in a business environment. Private land owners enjoy having surroundings that are unique to
them and their site and broader landscape benefits from a site responsive approach that allows resilience through diversity.
Communication
This is a critical skill with many facets in a project from gathering broad information, clearly understanding and articulating the client’s brief and then being a strong advocate for that design on behalf the client. This then flows through to accurate and thorough design documentation, and outcome focused on-site communication.
Project Delivery
The practice has a proud history of project delivery that is on time, on budget and delivered to best practice standards. This has meant that we retain long and satisfying relationships with delivery focused clients. In addition to this the thoroughness and professionalism of our documentation and contract administration means that construction companies are always
keen to price and construct our work. This ultimately provides our clients with more choice and the best combination of cost, time and quality in project delivery.
