About us

Engineering, Energy & Environmental Design eCubed Building Workshop is one of New Zealand’s leading Building Services and ESD consultancies.

Since 2005, we have built a reputation for integrating sustainable design with traditional engineering skills.

Principal disciplines offered by eCubed include Mechanical, Electrical, Hydraulics, Specialist Lighting, Renewable Energy, Building Physics, Green Star and Living Building Challenge Assessments, Environmental Design, and Sustainability. Sub-disciplines offered include Vertical Transportation, Fire Protection Engineering, and Acoustics.

A common thread for all our projects is the quality of the internal environment created, and a commitment to resilience and sustainability into the future. We aim to work on significant and interesting projects rather than adopting a catch-all market approach.

For over sixteen years we have worked alongside architects to develop sustainable design frameworks and concepts that are refined and tested through the use of advanced modelling tools. We recognise that delivery skills are particularly important, and use Revit/BIM modelling for all our projects.

Design is only half the story. We develop close working relationships with contractors and specialist sub-contractors to realise our designs in a proactive and defect-free way.

In addition to our services in engineering, energy and environmental design, we carry out applied research projects, peer reviews, provide building science education, and Continuing Professional Development Services to the building industry.

What We Do

Our True Green approach contains a comprehensive and integrated range of design-led and results-driven services that touch all points of a built environment’s lifecycle. We see our responsibilities as three-fold:

Design, Performance & Lifetime Care.

1. Design

The design of buildings and urban environments impacts environmental performance before a spade even breaks ground.

Our integrated design processes reduce building running costs, improve internal environments and result in higher occupant satisfaction.

Our masterplanning and urban design studies investigate the application of sustainable design principles and infrastructure in larger developments and towns.

2. Performance

To ensure the promise of design is brought to life from the drawing board into the real world, we apply performance tools during design and handover. These inform design processes, benchmark the finished design, and ensure the building operates as expected.

This gives the design team and client a confidence and certainty that the building will meet its requirements from day one, and then well into its life.

3. Lifetime Care

Cutting the ribbon on a building is often seen as the end of a journey, but in some ways it’s just the beginning.

Healthy, comfortable and efficient internal environments require proper operation and maintenance. We offer services that assist with handover, tracking operational performance and setting strategies for refurbishment or system replacement.

We also have experience in services upgrades for seismic strengthening.

Principles & Environmental Policy

Our vision is to improve the built environment while reducing its environmental impact.
It is more apparent than ever that concerted effort from industry is needed for the abatement of climate change.
Our company was founded on this idea over fifteen years ago, and efforts to keep New Zealand a clean, green, beautiful country are at the heart of what we do.

Our vision is embedded in the way we work via our Principles & Environmental Policy -

Our Principles:

  1. Design and Consultancy. We provide our customers with high-quality, effective solutions that have low environmental impact.
In every project, we will strive to find a cost-effective way of reducing resources and minimising emissions, without compromise.
  2. People. We are committed to working together to achieve the goals laid out in this policy. Every employee brings their own individual ideas and passions to the projects we are involved in, and the business as a whole.
  3. Profitability. We believe in making a difference to New Zealand, and this would be impossible without profitability and growth of the company. However, our aim is not to become the biggest consultancy - just the best in what we do.
  4. Environmental. We are continually seeking ways in which we can minimise our effect on the environment, through our work and in our everyday lives. We bring environmental sustainability to every project and similarly encourage the project teams and individuals we work with.
  5. Ethical. We will not tolerate social injustice. We respect all of our colleagues, partners and clients, irrespective of race, gender, religion, sexuality, disability or health status.
  6. Equality. Everyone has a voice and is encouraged to contribute their thoughts. Our leaders are expected to act fast and effectively, but listen and respect the views of everyone.
  7. Community. We consider social and cultural aspects in every project, and seek solutions that bring people closer to each other and their surroundings.
  8. Partnership. We believe partnership is important in achieving our vision, and actively seek collaboration with those who endeavour to develop and adapt. We will not do business with those who are opposed to change.
  9. Accountability. We will act ethically, effectively and be fully accountable for our actions. We will set clear targets which we will strive to meet.
  10. Passion. We are passionate about what we do, and determined to succeed in our mission.

Our Environmental Policy:

The following policy framework functions in-line with our ten principles listed above.
This policy will be reviewed regularly and reports made available for all employees, clients, contractors and project team colleagues.

We will:

  • Comply with all environmental legislation, standards and other requirements with which we subscribe.
  • Endeavour to provide designs that will be effective, efficient and minimise environmental impact.
  • Respect the environment and act to reduce our impact on it.
  • Continually improve the environmental performance of the company.
  • Maintain a monitoring programme and regular reporting of the environmental performance of the company.
  • Provide environmental training for the company and promote individual and collective responsibility for the environment.

Philosophy

Our way of working seeks to establish and build on long-term, durable and collaborative working relationships, with the following operating principles -

  • We are a client-centric practice. Our work relates closely to the needs and aspirations of our clients. These are explored by listening, talking and then tailoring our advice and designs accordingly.
  • We provide a thoughtful, practical, challenging and personal approach to the design and management of projects.
  • We view design as an active process of collaboration, rather than the passive giving of advice. We are interested in all aspects and outcomes of the design - not just those we are appointed for.
  • Our service is uniquely based on staff - including Directors - providing design input into projects from concept to completion, to ensure promise of the design is delivered.
  • We aim to develop and maintain a high standard of environmental awareness — to continuously improve environmental performance in our own activities and on our projects for clients, wherever we have control or influence.
  • We have established a good reputation for progressive, innovative and cost-effective sustainable building design, based on the people we have, their experience and the work they produce.  We don’t, however, believe in innovation for innovation’s sake — more as means for solving the needs of the client and their project, in the most effective way.
  • A unique feature of the eCubed Building Workshop team is that experienced practitioners are provided in all the key disciplines, so that an integrated and holistic view can be taken for the benefit of the project.
  • We pride ourselves as team players, who are willing to listen to all parties.

Awards

We are proud to have worked on a many award-winning projects, and acknowledge the collaboration required with clients, architects and other companies to achieve them.

Quality Assurance & Control

Our Quality Assurance and Control System has been purpose-designed as an effective operational management system, suited to a relatively small company. We pride ourselves on ensuring the requirements of our clients are met in a cost effective, technically suitable and timely manner.

Our prime objective, which relates to our structure, is for projects to be staffed only by quality staff, with a high level of technical skill, experience and management ability.

David Fullbrook is the eCubed Director responsible for quality assurance, and there is a commitment by all our staff that adherence to our Company’s systems and procedures are everyones’ concern.

David regularly carries out independent peer reviews of other consultants’ projects throughout New Zealand, and is respected for his wide-ranging, but always constructive, criticism.

Our two quality procedures comprise ‘Project Control’ and ‘Support Services’ —

Project Control Procedures cover our core business activity of providing engineering services to clients.

Support Services Procedures cover the management and control of office functions and systems, including project numbers, distribution filing and archiving, resource and reference documentation and equipment, software and systems.

A key aspect of our in-house quality control procedure is to carry out multi-discipline, in-house technical reviews at the completion of the preliminary, developed and detailed design stages, where each discipline presents their proposals to their in-house peers in a design charrette/workshop environment. In this way, we ensure that coordination and interfaces between disciplines are addressed, and that all the firm’s technical resources are brought to bear in a concentrated manner, at key stages of the project.
