About us
At Fiona Macpherson Architecture we actively encourage our clients to reduce their footprint on this earth and consider their health by choosing natural non-toxic materials where possible.
We have experience using different high-performance build techniques including SIPS; we hold a belief that investing in your building envelope will reduce running costs, create a healthier home and leave a positive legacy for future generations.
We see our role as the designer to facilitate a joyful relationship between the client and the builder to create timeless architecture that meets the needs of the occupants. Often for us, it is about matching personalities to facilitate positive outcomes.
Fiona has 25 years experience in architecture in New Zealand and England. Our small team prides itself on producing concise, clear documentation helped by the move into BIM modelling. We share our 3D and VR models with our clients creating a design tool to foster full understanding and avoid disappointment. This process often results in excitement, enthusiasm and a sense of collaboration for the project ahead.

About the Designer
Fiona Macpherson has more than 25 years construction industry experience in New Zealand and overseas in England. Fiona’s early years were spent working on University and other commercial projects but in later years her focus has shifted to residential. Influenced by her travels noting others live in much more compact environments - Fiona has developed a cliental within Fiona Macpherson Architecture and Black Hut Designs who agree small is best and occupants health is paramount.
Fiona Macpherson Architecture has a diverse range of clients who have passion for designing energy efficient houses meeting needs with smart design to reduce our footprint on this earth. The diversity of FMA’s clients and locations has given Fiona the opportunity to work within a range of design parameters, helping establishing her aesthetic incorporating natural materials where possible.
Black Hut Designs started with small resilient designs which could be easily moved out of trouble similar to the original occupants of Aotearoa. Over time we realised connection to land and place is equally important not only to people here in Christchurch but across New Zealand. The focus changed along Black Hut’s journey to designing resilient high performance buildings exploring sustainable non-toxic materials which can withstand not only the test of time but successfully maintain their connection to the land.
Through these ventures Fiona has established her strong aesthetic while incorporating her values in sustainable, healthy, functional residential design.
