About us
G D Rutter Ltd is a privately owned and operated New Zealand company that is a leading supplier of residential architectural door hardware, cabinet ware and commercial door automation.
G D Rutter offers a wide range of door handles and knobs, covering all entrance pull handles, electronic smart locks, banister brackets, mortice locks, door stops, and a comprehensive offering of kitchen cabinet handles, knobs, drawer pulls in a wide range of finishes from the popular satin nickel, to the trend-setting graphite and brushed brass.
Founded in 1930 by George Daniel Rutter, as an importing agent specialising in builders’ hardware. Three generations and 90 years later GD Rutter has grown to be one of New Zealand's prominent suppliers of door and cabinet hardware to the hardware trade under the Sylvan brand name. In 2017 G D Rutter formed GDR Architectural providing commercial door automation solutions supported by the international brand Record.
Throughout the 90 years of business, there has always been a strong family influence with an emphasis on customer satisfaction and product quality. Now G D Rutter Ltd is managed by the 3 grandsons of George Daniel, who have grown up with hardware products and being involved in the business from a very young age. This early involvement in hardware products has ensured that the leadership of G D Rutter Ltd has a strong product and technical knowledge together with superior customer service these qualities sets our company apart from many other hardware suppliers in New Zealand.
Caring for your Sylvan Hardware
Thank you for choosing one of G D Rutter's Sylvan products, here are a few helpful hints to make sure you keep your Sylvan product in good working order. Caring for the finish of your product:
- The plated finishes of polished brass, gold, black, black nickel plate, are all classified as soft finishes.
- It is essential that no cleaning products are sprayed onto items that have a black finish as cleaning products will damage the finish.
- Polished brass and stainless steel Sylvan products do require a little bit of TLC from the homeowner, to ensure the finish remains in its purchased condition. Sea salt, dust, oil from hands, and environmental conditions can cause specs or discolouration to the surface. It is essential that these surfaces are cleaned regularly (every 3 months) with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Or for Stainless steel products use a stainless steel cleaner and lanolin to protect their surface
- Sometimes over time installed items will work themselves loose, it is essential that when you see any backplate or screw becoming loose that you tighten them up. To tighten always turn in a clockwise motion. If your hardware is not kept secure it can put pressure on the set and cause internal damage, this is especially important for doorknobs and handles.
