The Hansen Story

Hansen Timber origins begin in 1874 when Peder Christian Hansen arrived in Gisborne by ship from the Island of Fyn (now called Funen) with his wife Maria and five of their children.

The courage and fortitude of these emigrants leaving their home lands and setting off in a smallish sailing ship to go to a new and unknown country with a different lifestyle and unknown language has to be marveled at.

There were many deaths and damaging storms on the journey.

The New Zealand Hansen Milling story begins when Hans Peter Christian (son of Peter Christian Hansen) is recorded as being on the earliest pioneer settlers in the Motu District which was then in its origin state being covered in dense bush. The hardy pioneer and his sons had to make a clearing before they could even erect a tent.

The timber they milled was used to build most of the houses and local buildings in the area.

Jumping several generations Hansen Timber ends up in Clevedon, with John Hansen Ryall a direct Danish descendant continuing in the milling industry.

John’s father “Phil” married Judy Hansen and from the beginning in the late 1950’s, timber was milled on the farm in various ways.

Firstly backbreaking work by freehand chainsaw to produce all the fence posts used on our Farm, then by alaskin mill and later a singe large rotary blade bench saw.

More recently newer equipment such as a Bandsaw, Mortiser Planer, wide belt Sander and a European Weinig Powermat Moulding Machine, has been employed to add value to the timber that is sawn and processed at Eyres Road in Clevedon.

Hansen Timber is proud to be part of a renewable resource industry and on this Clevedon property has planted more than 200,000 native trees which are protected and can never be milled to support our environmental conservation efforts.

Pine

In the serene woodlands of New Zealand, Hansen Timber’s pine plantations stand as a testament to the sustainable harmony between nature and industry. Our pine, with its signature straight grain and soft, even texture, is a cornerstone of the timber world, offering both resilience and adaptability. Grown with an unwavering commitment to environmental care, our pines are a testament to eco-friendly forestry practices.

Radiating with a light, natural hue that ranges from creamy white to a gentle yellow, pine wood is renowned for its ability to absorb stains and finishes uniformly, presenting a canvas that invites a spectrum of design possibilities. The wood’s inherent workability makes it a dream for carpenters and craftsmen alike, yielding to the creative touch with ease and allowing for a fine, smooth finish that showcases its understated elegance.

Our New Zealand pine is particularly lauded for its structural integrity, making it a go-to resource for construction needs. From the sturdy beams that frame a house to the delicate panelling that lines its interior, pine provides a reliable foundation without compromising on aesthetic appeal. Its natural resistance to shrinkage and swelling ensures long-term performance, a quality that is especially important in New Zealand’s varied climate.

The environmental footprint of Hansen Timber’s pine is as light as the wood itself. As a rapidly renewable resource, our pine trees mature quickly, allowing for more frequent harvesting without depleting forest reserves. This cycle of growth and renewal positions pine as a truly sustainable choice for eco-conscious consumers and builders who prioritise green building materials.

At Hansen Timber, we harness the latest in timber processing technology to maximise the potential of our pine. Whether it’s transforming the timber into robust posts and beams, crafting precision-moulded profiles, or slicing it into fine boards and slabs, each product reflects our dedication to quality.

For outdoor projects, pine's compatibility with preservative treatments makes it a durable option for fencing, decking, and landscaping. Indoors, its light colour and grain provide a sense of openness and brightness, making spaces feel more welcoming.

Choosing Hansen Timber's pine means embracing a wood that not only meets your project's demands with performance and style but also shares the story of New Zealand’s commitment to sustainable forestry. With every use, this pine stands not just as a material, but as a symbol of lasting, living design.

Macrocarpa

Nestled within the verdant landscapes of New Zealand, Hansen Timber proudly cultivates the majestic macrocarpa, an emblematic tree that yields one of the most sought-after timbers in the industry. Our macrocarpa stands as a testament to the art of sustainable forestry, grown with care on our property, ensuring each tree reaches its full potential both in size and quality.

Macrocarpa, Cupressus macrocarpa by its botanical name, boasts a striking golden-brown colour that deepens with age, radiating a natural lustre that is both visually arresting and touchably smooth. Its grain, typically straight with an occasional wave, adds to its rustic appeal, making it a woodworker's delight for both aesthetic and functional pieces.

This versatile timber has a storied reputation for its natural durability, owed to its rich oil content that imparts a robust defence against fungal decay and insect attacks. This inherent resilience makes macrocarpa an exemplary choice for outdoor applications — from sturdy, long-lasting fence posts and railway sleepers that brave the elements, to garden furniture and decking that age gracefully with a silvery patina.

Within the home, macrocarpa's aromatic scent and inviting appearance lend themselves to a warm, rustic ambiance. It is ideal for interior panelling, exposed beams, and flooring, infusing spaces with an organic charm that complements both traditional and contemporary designs. Furthermore, the wood's workability is exceptional; it machines smoothly, carves elegantly, and finishes to a fine sheen, allowing for a myriad of decorative and structural uses.

At Hansen Timber, we approach each harvest with a commitment to environmental stewardship, carefully selecting and milling our macrocarpa to minimise waste and maximise utility. Our state-of-the-art machinery, including the renowned Weinig 500, is calibrated to work in harmony with the wood's unique properties, creating precision cuts and mouldings that meet bespoke specifications with ease.

Our macrocarpa is more than just a building material; it is a slice of New Zealand's natural heritage, offering a sustainable solution for those who are environmentally conscious and in pursuit of quality. Each board, post, and custom moulding holds a narrative of growth and meticulous craftsmanship.

By choosing Hansen Timber’s macrocarpa for your projects, you are not only selecting a premium timber renowned for its strength and beauty but also supporting a legacy of sustainable forestry practices that honour the lush landscapes of New Zealand. Embrace the enduring charm of macrocarpa, and let its natural elegance be the highlight of your architectural story.

Swamp Kauri

Swamp Kauri, also known as ancient Kauri, is a unique and precious timber found in New Zealand. This wood is extracted from ancient trees buried in peat swamps for thousands of years, dating back to the last Ice Age. The preservation process gives Swamp Kauri its distinctive characteristics, including rich, deep colors and intricate grain patterns that are unmatched by any other wood.

Due to its historical significance and rarity, Swamp Kauri is highly valued for its beauty and durability. It is often used in high-end furniture, flooring, and bespoke woodcraft projects, adding a touch of timeless elegance and natural history to any piece. The wood's natural resilience and stability make it suitable for various applications, ensuring that crafted items retain their beauty and strength over time.

Sustainability is a key aspect of Swamp Kauri harvesting. The wood is sourced from non-living trees that have naturally fallen and been preserved underground, meaning no live Kauri trees are felled in the process. This practice helps preserve the living Kauri forests while making use of a resource that nature has already provided.

Incorporating Swamp Kauri into your projects not only brings a unique aesthetic appeal but also connects you to New Zealand’s ancient natural heritage. Its luxurious finish and historical background make it a prized material for those seeking something truly extraordinary. At Hansen Timber, we are proud to offer Swamp Kauri products, ensuring the highest quality and authenticity for all your timber needs.
