LOC Construction

LES O’CONNELL FOUNDED THE COMPANY IN 1992 AND SINCE THEN HAS BEEN PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY WORKMANSHIP TO THE CHRISTCHURCH RESIDENTIAL BUILDING INDUSTRY.

Les: "I commenced my four year carpentry apprenticeship in Timaru in 1974 and worked a further two years as a tradesman taking more control and running projects.

I moved to Christchurch in 1980 to follow my sporting passion, rowing and started my own building business to be able to accommodate my rowing training. Over the following four years I represented NZ in rowing winning two World Championship gold medals in 1982, 1983 and an Olympic gold in 1984 at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Rowing taught me persistence and to never accept anything less than 100%, attributes I have always applied to my business. This has paid dividends when entering Master Builders House of the Year Awards with wins each year we entered this very competitive event.

LOC Construction is a small team, I find this is the best way to provide the best quality and experience for our clients. It means I am still onsite and very much involved in the day to day progress of any job and in constant contact with sub contractors assuring the best possible quality control."

"Our subcontractors have worked with us for many years and they are aware of my expectations and I continue to use them as they meet those high standards. Our team and theirs all know each other well which provides harmony on the building site, essential when trades are all trying to work around each other. When pricing a new plan I will only get prices from these sub contractors because I have confidence in their standard of work, their organisational abilities and their integrity.

Six years ago our son Tom decided he wanted to join the company completing his four year apprenticeship and becoming a capable and clear thinking tradesman. He is currently completing papers in business and project management by correspondence as well as working on site full time.
