We love wood

Lundia people have a passion for working with wood. Which is just as well when you work with it every day. It’s a medium that has been used for centuries, and working with it is incredibly rewarding and calming. When you work with wood your creativity is limitless.

Lundia people all have a passion for the product, so they stay — our longest-standing employee has been with us for over 50 years! We’d say our average tenure is around 20 years.

The Lundia team is a real family, every one of them contributing skills and personality traits that make them valuable not only in their area of expertise but to the business as a whole.

In 1946 Harald Lundqvist utilised a self-tensioning principle which held components together. He applied these principles to a range of timber shelving which provided incredible strength and durability for his finished product.

It all began in Sweden in 1946, when young carpenter Harald Lundqvist had the idea of utilising a self-tensioning principle to hold timber shelving together securely, creating a revolutionary storage concept with incredible strength and durability. He went on to patent his design in 40 different countries.

A few years later, kiwi Monte Stone happened to be in Australia when he first saw the Lundia product.

He was impressed by the design knowing that New Zealand had plenty of pine, a renewable resource, he called Lundia headquarters in Sweden and proceeded to establish a franchise in New Zealand. By 1962 his own factory had been built in Auckland’s East Tamaki, giving him greater control over quality and ensuring that respect for the environment was a top priority.

The Present

Today, Lundia New Zealand is 100% privately owned and is busy manufacturing and delivering a range of sustainable modular interior furniture and storage solutions throughout New Zealand and Australia.

Monte’s keen interest in the product still keeps him involved, though he officially retired at age 90.

Inspired by nature's perfect functionality, our timber furniture is not only stylish and practical but a demonstration of our significant commitment to the environment. 

A history of environmental care

Through it all, environmental care has been at the heart of Lundia’s sustainability philosophy in both design and manufacturing. Using the principles of biophilic design, Lundia transforms your space into a natural habitat where you can feel good, work well, and live sustainably.

We use plantation-grown NZ pine and regularly assess our manufacturing processes with the goal of eliminating wastage.

Forward thinking design

At Lundia, we take great pleasure in designing and manufacturing pieces that will continue to connect with nature well into the future.

Care for the environment has been at the heart of Lundia’s philosophy from our beginning in 1962. From day one, we have very consciously designed modular interior furniture and storage systems to be sustainable and have as little impact on our environment as possible.

Repurposing and recycling

Nature doesn’t waste anything, so neither do we. We are constantly innovating to reduce wastage with the goal of recycling or reusing 100% of our product.

We carefully plan our cuts, using a “nesting” method to get as much as we can from every sheet of timber. Off-cuts are used in other smaller pieces of furniture - this is how our Eco Boxes came to be!

Naturally, we recycle cardboard, glass, and plastic. Even our wood shavings are collected and recycled as cat litter, or for absorbing oil spills.

Lundia is a modern fully equipped Furniture Manufacturing unit, hosting the latest in production software and machinery.

We have several production lines including Solid timber profiling, MDF CNC panel Nesting and CNC panel shaping, Aluminium processing, Spray painting, Roll coating, Laminate pressing, Rapid timber glue lamination panel production, Sanding, Laser edging, and Upholstery.

Manufacturing locally for the past 60 years, Lundia has built a reputation for sustainable durable quality production furniture.

Lundia’s modular flat packed design is professionally packed, compact, and easy to ship. Being an environmentally conscious business, Lundia is mindful of utilising packaging that can be recycled, reused or repurposed.

Since Lundia’s inception in New Zealand in 1962, we have retained the same sizes making our new shelves and uprights compatible with the old. There are always new and exciting additions that are being added to the range.
