BioFuel

The Science Of Ethanol
Bioethanol is pure alcohol. The combustion of bioethanol is clean which makes it an efficient and effective source of heat because there is no soot, ash or harmful emissions that need to be extracted through a flue - meaning all the heat stays in your room.

How Is Bioethanol Made?
Bioethanol - or simply 'ethanol' is a renewable energy source made by fermenting the sugar and starch components of plant by-products - mainly sugarcane and crops like grain, using yeast. It is also made from corn, potatoes, milk, rice, beetroot and recently grapes, banana and dates depending on the countries agricultural strength.

Why Is It Clean Burning?
Bioethanol is a renewable liquid fuel produced from agricultural by-products which burns clean - no smoke, no sparks, no fuss. The combustion of bioethanol results in a clean emission: Heat, Steam and Carbon Dioxide.

But relax, the amount of Co2 is only equivalent to an extra human in the room breathing, and steam is from the 3% water content, so definitely not enough to create condensation.

Why Is It Sustainable?
During combustion, the emissions from bioethanol are Heat, Steam and a small amount of Carbon Dioxide. Carbon Dioxide is absorbed by plants, it is then processed via photosynthesis to help the plant grow. This infinite cycle of creation and combustion of energy makes bioethanol a carbon-neutral fuel source.

Where Do I Get It From?
We supply and distribute our Bio Ethanol to your door nationwide and we guarantee supply. You will not buy a fire today and then we stop supplying fuel tomorrow. We are committed to our customers and will guarantee supply for many years to come, and we are not the only source, but we do aim to be the lowest price and best quality. See FUEL for pricing and delivery. We also now stock E-NRG fuel which works perfectly for your EcoSmart burner range. Check out their website here.

How Bio Fires Work

How Does A Bio Fuel Fire Work?
BioFuel fires are a relatively new concept to the New Zealand market, yet have become quite popular in Europe and other parts of the world that have smoke controlled zones similar to Christchurch, or for the ever-growing apartment scene like Auckland CBD, or homes that simply for some reason or other, it is too costly to install a wood or gas option.

Manual and Automatic
The operation of them is remarkably simple. You simply fill the self-contained reservoir with the Bio Ethanol and then with a long stem lighter, ignite the fuel. The fuel is ultimately the ‘magic’ ingredient that when burnt, creates no smoke or carbon monoxide, thus requiring no fluing or venting. To fill, we offer a Jerry can system, a fuel pump or for the smaller fires you can simply pour with a funnel.

We also offer the world-leading automated Bio Ethanol fires, that can be controlled at the touch of a button via remote control or smartphone app or the unit's own integrated touchscreen panel. These are found in the Deco flame product category.

Why Go Bio?

Choosing Between A BioFuel Or Gas Open Flame Fireplace?
See why biofuel provides a better solution.

The key differences.
There are many key differences between biofuel and open fronted gas fireplaces. We compare both options so you can understand the features and decide which fireplace best fits your lifestyle and space.

Some of the key differences are:

  • Installation requirements
  • Flame and heat output
  • Servicing and maintenance
  • Design flexibility
  • Fuel supply and running costs

Installation
Biofuel fireplaces do not require any utility connections, fresh air vents, a chimney or a flue, and with fewer subcontractors needed, this significantly reduces installation costs and time. Simply purchase a Naked Flame fireplace, have it installed, and enjoy. Or unpack and position a freestanding fireplace, which requires no installation.

Gas Fireplaces
It costs more money to install an open-fronted gas fireplace. For example, they require a fresh air vent, a flue (chimney), a gas connection point and an electrical connection.

Flame & Heat

Biofuel Fireplace
Biofuel fireplaces produce a vibrant orange ‘clean- burning’ flame. There is no heat loss because they do not require a flue or chimney, therefore all the warmth generated from the open flame is distributed into the room. A single biofuel burner can heat up to 65m2. A biofuel is an excellent option for smaller spaces or for installations where biofuel will be used in conjunction with another source of heat. *65m2 is based on using an XL1200 in an insulated room with a floor-to-ceiling height of 2.4m.

Gas Fireplaces
Gas fireplaces also produce a real flame, but not as vibrant as biofuel. The flame produced by an open-fronted gas fire will burn hotter than biofuel, however, most of the heat generated is lost through the flue. Open fronted gas fires must have a fresh air vent for the room they’re installed into, due to the ‘acceptable level’ of carbon monoxide produced by the gas fire.

Servicing

Biofuel Fireplaces
Our biofuel burners are made from 100% stainless steel and have no inaccessible moving parts, which means no expensive replacement costs. They can be simply washed out by hand in hot soapy water or in the dishwasher.

Gas Fireplaces
All gas fireplaces need servicing every 12-18 months to maintain their warranty. Servicing needs to be performed by a qualified gas fitter and does not include the cost of replacement parts which can be expensive.

Design Flexibility

Biofuel Fireplaces
Because biofuel is clean-burning, Naked Flame models do not need a chimney or a flue for venting. They can also be installed into a timber stud frame – in fact, almost anywhere!

Gas Fireplaces
It is not possible for every space to include a chimney, such as apartments or some commercial spaces.

Fuel Source

Biofuel Fireplaces
Biofuel ethanol is an eco-friendly fuel source that can be ordered online and delivered to your door.

Gas Fireplaces
LP Gas and Natural Gas are not carbon neutral, and Natural Gas is not readily available everywhere.

Running Costs

Biofuel Fireplaces
Average Cost $1.93/h (Based on the BK5 Burner)

Gas Fireplaces
LPG Average Cost $1.91/h. NG Average Cost $1.67/h.

*Gas prices do not include bottle hire/replacement fees ($340-$420 a year) or connection fees ($0.60- $0.90/day). The average cost of LPG was calculated by finding the average price per mj amongst 3 gas providers per state. NG average cost source: energy. gov.au report; 2017. Above prices are quoted in AUD.

FAQs

FAQs

Are Bio Fuel Fires Safe?
Yes. Absolutely, as long as instructions are followed and care is taken then they are 100% safe. All fireplaces can present some danger if mistreated, but compared to other fireplace options, we do believe our Biofuel and Gas fires are the safest on the market.

Will My Naked Flame Fire Heat My Room?
Yes, it will, but as Biofuel fires are non-fan forced like a heat pump, for example, the heat will rise as opposed to being pushed around the room (convection heat). For heat output ratings see the product description guide next to the fire you are interested in and check out our Heating Guide.

Does BioFuel Smell?
No. One of the best things about Naked Flame fires is that whether the fuel is burning or not, it will not smell or leave any odour or lingering smell or even smoke. Brilliant.

Are We Able To See One Working Before We Commit To A Purchase?
Yes. Absolutely. We are based in Takapuna on Auckland’s North Shore and are more than happy to demonstrate a fire to show you exactly what to expect when considering a BioFuel fire as an option. We have over 30 models on display of Gas and Biofuel fireplaces.

Can A Naked Flame Fireplace An Existing Fireplace?
Yes, and we don’t even care if your chimney is not fit for purpose. Our Naked Flame fires do not need to be vented or require an operational chimney. There are purpose made inserts or you can choose a freestanding fireplace to sit in front of your old one. Check Naked Flame Fires.

Can You Extinguish The Fire Before All The Fuel Has Burnt?
Yes, simply shut the cover with the tool supplied and the fire is starved of oxygen and extinguished. No dangerous burning embers can fall onto your carpet while you sleep.

How Do You Light The Fire?
We supply a lighter with each fire sold. These can also be purchased in Accessories.

Are Naked Flame Fires Easy To Install?
Yes, the Free Standing or Table Top models are ready to use straight from the box. The wall mounted series come with a mounting kit and wall brackets, so is similar to hanging a picture (if you are not confident in mounting these yourself then please seek a builder or professional handyman). The Burner Inserts and Fireboxes do require more time to install, but this can vary dependant on the install. We can offer guidance and comprehensive install manuals to assist with this.

Can I Clean My Naked Flame Fire?
Yes absolutely. As long as it has cooled down, then a soft cloth with a good liquid stainless steel cleaner from the supermarket or hardware store will be fine.

Where Can I Buy More BioFuel?
We do sell Bio Fuel that can be collected from our showroom in either 5l, 20l, or 200l quantities. We courier BioFuel in a minimum of 20l quantities nationwide door to door excluding rural. See FUEL for ordering.

How Long Will My Burner Run For?
This depends on the size of the burner but as an indication, the 1.5l burner lasts from 4.5 to 6 hours. The larger burners can last more than 11 hours continuous on a single fill. Depending on the wind circulating the room, the oxygen can feed the flame and make it larger thus burning more fuel. A still calm room will burn less fuel.

Are There Any Downsides To BioFuel Fires?
Being honest, we see far more positive benefits than negative. There is no perfect solution. Wood fires will generally produce more heat after time, but then you have the logistics and mess or firewood. Pallet fires also produce more heat but aren’t the most attractive units to look at. Gas fires do look more attractive than wood or pallet, but with the flue and venting requirements, the installation can dramatically increase the capital cost of the fire, then the running cost is not cheap either, and the amount of heat produced vs what comes into the room is often disappointing.

With Bio Ethanol fires, you have an open visual flame which is quite attractive aesthetically, and with minimal installation and no flue requirement, means all heat generated stays in the intended space. We do believe as more people are aware of this concept, they will surpass other fire sales in time. Read our customer testimonials to see what our customers think. We have had overwhelming positive reaction so far, so we look forward to seeing you soon to discuss a BioFuel fire as a consideration to your home or commercial space.

Safety

Safety is Naked Flame’s Number One Priority.

As for all types of fire and fireplaces, it is critical that caution and diligence is used at all times, and Bio Fuel fires are no different to any other type of open flame. It is essential to familiarise oneself with the safety procedures associated with using any Naked Flame Bio Fire, and to educate and diligently induct any other users of the fireplace and it’s safety.

Bio Fuel Fireplace technology is not well known and therefore we recommend that owners thoroughly read the user manual prior to operation, and familiarise themselves with the Fire they have purchased, and treat the Bio Fuel as a highly flammable liquid as they would a petroleum product.
