Natural Paint Co

About us
Natural Paint Co was created with an uncompromising promise; to make the world’s best paint that is healthier for people and our planet.
After learning the pitfalls of the paint industry, which for over 70 years has favoured petrochemicals and toxic ingredients, the co-founders of Natural Paint Co – Grace and James both quit their career paths to create a business that would redefine the paint industry.
Working with leading paint chemists, we have created natural, plant based paints and oils that far exceed industry standards, while solving colossal sustainable and ethical issues within the industry.
Our Story
Our Mission
At Natural Paint Co, we live by 4 simple values:
- Performance without compromise - Offer the best product with industry leading quality and guarantees.
- Utilise & protect nature - Prioritise natural ingredients, and protect nature through our business practices.
- Healthy equals happy - Cause no unnecessary harm to humans, animals or the planet.
- Inspire change - Redefine the paint industry through constant innovation that is better for the people and the planet.
Our Pillars
Health
Paints use 1000’s different chemicals, with many being harmful to your health. At Natural Paint Co, we use well-researched ingredients that have no negative impact on your health during or after painting and disclose all of these for you.
Quality
Using decades of scientific knowledge, we have transformed natural clays, resins, and pigments into high-quality paints & oils right here in Aotearoa. Natural Paint Co paints are scientifically formulated with everything you need and nothing you don't.
Sustainability
Sustainability is at the core of everything we do, from prioritising natural and renewable ingredients, to our initiatives of recycling or donating leftover paint. To further our impact, we protect rainforests with every order.
Where we're headed
Natural Paint Co's goal is to become one of the leading coating suppliers in New Zealand, and worldwide. Now five years on, Natural Paint Co continues to make waves and strive towards this goal, bucking convention nationally and internationally. Grace & James' passion and drive come from the desire to bring clients not only exceptional products, but a total experience that adds value to their life and wellbeing.
Sustainability
Our products are made right here in New Zealand with high quality plant and earth based materials. We prioritise ingredients that can be found in nature and are sustainability sourced.
Sustainable & Renewable Materials
Every product we offer is created from natural and renewable resources. Conventional chemical based household paints often contain over 1,000 ingredients, and most are not listed on the label. These paints can be heavily loaded with chemicals, solvents and synthetic ingredients which release harmful toxins into the air during and after application – often for years.
Our natural paints are made from raw materials that can be found in nature, come from self renewing resources and can be recycled and composted after use.
VOC free – Better for the environment
Volatile Organic Compounds are well known to be a significant contributor to harmful toxins being released during and after painting. Unfortunately in New Zealand, most low VOC paints only measure VOC's that are negatively affecting our outdoor air pollution. This means conventional paints can still include harmful chemicals which aren't considered VOC's but are still toxic to our indoor air quality.
All of our paints and oils are VOC free and free of all other harmful chemicals. You can rest assured that our paints are helping to keep your indoor and outdoor air healthy and fresh.
Saving 1m2 of Rainforest for every 1m2 of Paint
For every 1sqm of the area you paint or oil with our products, Natural Paint Co saves 1sqm of Amazonian rainforest through a rainforest trust. This means for every 10-litre pail you buy, you will be directly saving around 8 car parking spaces of precious forest from deforestation. To date, we have saved over 2 million sqm of Amazonian Rainforest.

What is different about your paint?
Natural Paint Co products are all based on natural ingredients making them safer to use. We use a large range of plant oils, waxes, tree resins, china clay etc. We do not use ingredients such as chlorinated hydrocarbon; fungicides; insecticides; bactericides; xylene; toluene; benzene; formaldehyde; phenol; heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium or copper.
We have made it our policy to list our ingredients on our labels and on our product data sheets. We do this so consumers can see what is in the products and make their own choices about the safety of the finishes we have available.
What are your paints made from?
The raw ingredients we use are predominantly found in nature, and are turned into paints, oils and varnishes using “nature’s gentle chemistry”, a soft and green chemistry approach to manufacturing. China clay, talc, plant oils, tree resins and waxes are amongst the most common raw materials used. Look out for full details of ingredients on product data sheets and container labels.

Some of our products dry at different rates to conventional paints. This is a good thing to know before you start painting so you can keep it in mind when allowing for drying times. If you have any questions, get in touch with our team, they are all available to help.
Can I safely use your paint on my baby's cot/bedroom?
Yes. They have been safely used in hospitals, nurseries, schools - for more information see product datasheets.
Are your paints suitable for people with allergies and/or chemical sensitivities?
Some people can be allergic to natural products, but we find that many people with allergies, or with chemical sensitivities, can successfully use our products. First – check the product data sheets to see if any of the ingredients listed are ones that you are aware may cause you problems. Next – we always recommend that allergy sufferers trial the products to ensure they are suitable. Use our test pots to establish if products are safe for you. If you have allergies or are sensitive to ingredients such as: milk, bee products, citrus oil, lavender oil etc, please contact us.
How do I measure how much paint or product I need?
We have a fabulous Paint & Oil calculator that can help work out how much product you will need for your project.
Walls – measure the length of each wall and add them together; multiply this by the height of the room. Measure the door and window openings and subtract them from the total. This will give you the square metres of the area to be covered. Check with the relevant datasheet for coverage details.
Ceiling – multiply the length by the width. This will give you the square metres of the area to be covered. Check with the relevant datasheet for coverage details.
Floors – multiply the length by the width. This will give you the square metres of the area to be covered. Check with the relevant datasheet for coverage details.
Once you have the square metres of the area to be coated, divide by the product coverage rate, this will give you the number of litres required per coat. To work out the total litres required multiply by the number of coats.
i.e. 60m² ÷ 12 = 5 Litres per coat. 2 coats = 10 Litres. Be a little generous in your measurements – it is better to have a little left over paint than not enough to finish your task.
How do I test for adhesion compatibility?
When coating a surface that is already painted or wall-papered we recommend an adhesion test: apply a small amount of paint directly onto the applicable area; once completely dry, make a cross in the new paint using a craft knife. Smooth a piece of sticky tape over the crossed area. Leave for a few moments and then pull away. If the tape removes any paint it has failed the test. An undercoat or removal of the wall paper may be necessary.
Do you do colour matching?
Don't see the colour you are after? We offer a colour matching service, with our very talented colour matches. Colour matching is free for orders 4 Litres and over and just $40 per colour for orders under. Give us a call to place an order for a colour match!
Do your paints contain any animal products or are any of them tested on animals?
Our paints & oils are all vegan and not tested on animals!
Are your paints safe to use on children's toys?
Yes, our paints & oils are safe to use on children's toys and meet EU standards, some of the most stringent worldwide.
We recommend
Painted finish: 2x coats of our wall paint/Enamel Paint followed by 1-2 coats of our Pure Interior Oil
