Our Story
We’ve been the only industry organisation with members from the entire sector for 36 years and counting…
In 1964 the foundations of the NZIOB were built as part of the Australian Institute of Building (AIB). In 1983 NZIOB was incorporated and became an independent organisation. Since then NZIOB and our members have stayed true to its two main focuses:
Development of an active and collegial construction community that provides CPD and social events to a membership that is drawn across the entire sector.
Representing the entire construction industry as an energetic, articulate, and reliable stakeholder.
The NZIOB is committed to our members, by offering a great membership experience and we take on projects and represent the industry according to our four foundation principles:
Encouraging high performance within the construction industry and raising standards and productivity;
Representing the construction industry and lobbying on its behalf;
Fostering construction research and innovation;
Engagement with Government;
Providing quality Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events for industry.
Every two years the NZIOB National Board sets its strategic direction and progress against the resulting Strategic Plan is evaluated every 60 days.
Awards
The New Zealand Institute of Building (NZIOB) has been running an annual awards programme since 1994. For the 25th edition of the awards in 2018, the NZIOB Awards for Excellence was renamed the New Zealand Building Industry Awards. The new name clearly identifies that this awards programme pertains to the building industry. What has not changed, is the focus of both the NZIOB and GIB® on acknowledging and celebrating the practitioners behind New Zealand’s most successful building projects.
Sure, there will be a fair bit of hand-shaking, an enthusiastic “well done” or two and other congratulatory expressions at the NZIOB award show, but it is more than that. A masterclass showing the best achievements in the building industry for the year. The work we celebrate inspires others to study, debate, copy and reference its excellence, so each NZIOB award show gets better and better, and more inspiring.
The NZIOB Charitable Trust
The NZIOB Charitable Trust is registered on the Charities Register (registration number CC32376), first registered in June 2008, being a re-registration of the earlier NZIOB Charitable Trust founded in 1985 (required with legislation changes). A 11 March 1993 letter from Garry Tait noted: “The Trust was formed in 1985 and is specifically used for educational purposes, grants and scholarships.”
Visit the NZIOB Charitable trust website to find out more and to register for upcoming events: nziobcharitabletrust.org.nz
Conferences
The NZIOB hosts regular conferences of scale, which has included the development of the Asia-Pacific ‘Constructing our World’ conference brand (Auckland in 2017, Sydney in 2019), BIMinNZ (2019 and 2021), and ‘Built to Last (2020).
Governance
The NZIOB National Board is comprised of up to nine members who meet every two months. There are six Board Members who are appointed via a biennial election process. The nominated/elected members are: Chair, up to 3 x Regional Representatives, and up to 3 x Membership Representatives.
In addition, the National Board can co-opt two Board Members to fill any gaps that may be identified in the Board make-up. The co-opted Board Members can be drawn from both the NZIOB membership and (if required) from the wider building industry.
