Pelorus Architecture is a New Zealand architectural practice specialising in workspace design.

Over 20 years we have developed a reputation for consistent performance, delivering workspaces that work, meeting the needs of corporate and government clients throughout New Zealand.

We pride ourselves on designing workplaces tailored to the values and character of each client. Our ability to do so is evidenced by the many longstanding relationships we have formed with our clients.

Pelorus Architecture is a New Zealand Institute of Architects’ NZIA Practice.

Our Services

Workplace Design

Just as the nature of work is changing, the workplace must change – but how? That is a question with a different answer for every organisation. We bring our own insights, but work closely with clients in a collaborative way to develop flexible, forward-looking solutions. We have a large portfolio of commercial workplace design, offering unique solutions that work for differing workplaces. Designing a variety of workplace environments incorporating individual work, collarabrative, non-assigned work spaces and zoning.

Architectural Design

We look for fresh new design opportunities in each project, but we also bring our considerable experience from our previous work. The result is a unique solution reflecting best practice and the individual needs of each client.

We listen to our clients so that we properly understand their needs and aspirations. With our architecture we strive to exceed expectations and provide a building or a fitout that inspires.

Residential Design

We provide a full range of residential design services including preliminary design, contract documentation and contract administration and can tailor the scope of our service to suit individual project requirements. Our portfolio of residential work includes alterations and additions to character homes, full refurbishments, and new-build homes.

Project Management

On many of our projects we undertake project management for our clients. We are equally comfortable however working with separate external project managers – successful projects are delivered by good teams, where every participant has strong individual skills – good ideas can come from anywhere!

Corporate Social Responsibility

We are committed to the highest ethical relationships with all who we deal with - clients, the building industry and the wider community. In addition we believe in the importance of contributing positively to the community.

Our ethical standards start with the New Zealand Registered Architects’ Board “Code of Minimum Standards of Ethical Conduct for Registered Architects”, but go further than that, to include the duty of care we feel not just as architects, but as responsible members of the wider community.

Clients

  • We will perform our professional work with due care and diligence. This means that we always undertake a professional and comprehensive job, regardless of the level of fee agreed.

  • Our judgement is unprejudiced and unbiased - our remuneration comes solely from the fees and benefits specified in our appointment.

  • We will always observe the confidentiality of our client's affairs.

  • We will  disclose to clients, owners, or contractors anything that could be construed as creating a conflict of interest.

The Building Industry

  • We have built our professional reputation on the merits of our own performance; and do not claim as our own the intellectual property and ideas of others.

  • We administer all contracts impartially

  • Tendering and procurement are conducted in ways that treat all parties fairly.

  • We believe in making a positive contribution to the industry, by extensive involvement in professional bodies and industry organisations.

The Wider Community

  • We will not misrepresent ourselves, or promote ourselves or our professional services in a false, fraudulent, misleading, or deceptive manner.

  • Our positive contribution to the community includes continuing pro bono support of a range of community, social and sports organisations.

  • We will so far as is reasonably practicable ensure that our designs are without risk to the health and safety of contractors and end users.

Staff Commitment

A professional services firm is only as good as the people it employs. That is why we strive to be an employer of choice, and pride ourselves on a very low level of staff turnover. Our commitment includes:

  • Non-discriminatory policies – we are an equal opportunity employer.

  • Fair and transparent treatment of all staff in accordance with negotiated Conditions of Employment.

  • Regular reviews of staff performance.

  • Safe working conditions, in line with our Health and Safety policy.

  • Support for training initiatives.

  • Flexibility in working hours

Environmental Commitment

Pelorus’s commitment to environmental sustainability is based on our recognition that our activities affect the environment in two ways: firstly through the effects of our design decisions and secondly through the way we operate our business in-house.

By Design

By far the greatest effect of our activities however comes from the design decisions we make on behalf of our clients.

  • Several recent projects have been submitted for New Zealand Green Building Council Green Star Rating, and some current ones are being designed with a view to achieving a high Nabers rating for low energy consumption in use. .

  • We consider environmental sustainability in all the work we do however, regardless of whether ratings are a consideration. This chiefly involves material selection, avoiding the use of materials with a range of deleterious environmental effects, reusing where practical and sizing to minimise wastage, and using materials that have credible third party environmental ratings.

In House

Pelorus’s commitment in-house focuses primarily on the minimisation of waste and energy use.

  • We minimise printing, and when we do print we do so double sided.

  • We recycle paper, cardboard, plastics and glass.  As a result waste created is minimal.

  • We recycle toner and ink cartridges for refilling and reuse.

  • We reuse paper that has been printed single side

  • Our office fitout maximised reuse of previously used components, and new materials were chosen to minimise their impact – all joinery is made from low formaldehyde MDF, carpet came with a guaranteed take-back and recycle from the supplier, paints and adhesives  were low-VOC.

  • Our premises are naturally ventilated, with minimal mechanical heating and cooling - . we accept and tolerate a greater degree of temperature variability within the office.

  • Lighting is automatically dimmed by daylight sensors.

  • We are continually looking for further ways to minimise our environmental footprint.
