Sustainability

At Resene Construction Systems we ensure that all of our products adhere to the best environmental standards.

Greensite

Resene Construction Systems GreenSite strategy is full circle. Raw material supply through to product application is considered with all Rockcote products and systems.

The process monitors the resources we use and the waste that is produced, whilst maintaining consideration of the environmental performance and the applications of our products.

Resene Construction Systems Incorporates ‘new’ recyclable materials into products ensuring we don’t compromise; Strength, durability, or integrity. Ultimately reducing our impact on the environment. New Recyclables that are currently included in virtually all Rockcote Systems are;

  • EPS – new grind from local EPS manufacturers is incorporated into our lightweight plaster products such as LiteRock.
  • Glass – refined recycled glass is incorporated into all Rockcote base renders replacing a natural component of sand as a filler.

Since the inception of LiteRock Solid Plaster over twenty years ago we have utilized over 10,000 cubic metres of new recyclable EPS waste.

Environmental Choice

Resene Paints is well-known for its role in introducing waterborne paint to the local market in the 1950s and for its groundbreaking move to remove lead from its decorative paint products in the late 1960s. Joining the Environmental Choice programme in 1996 was another logical step, reafirming our commitment to the environment. Resene have the only comprehensive range of Environmental Choice paints in New Zealand approved since 1996.

Environmental Choice is a programme endorsed by the Ministry for the Environment. It is aimed at improving the quality of the environment by minimising the adverse environmental impacts generated by the production, distribution, use and disposal of products.

Paint Recovery

Reduce, reuse, recycle with Resene.

Recognising that environmentally friendly products are just one piece of the sustainability matrix, Resene launched the Resene PaintWise programme, focused on delivering unwanted paint and paint packaging recovery services and education to minimise the impact of paint wastes on the environment.

Following nearly five years of development, Resene PaintWise, the first comprehensive local product stewardship program for home decorators, was launched in 2004 by Resene to encourage paint users to minimise the effects of their decorating on the environment. The first year of Resene PaintWise included unwanted paint and paint packaging recovery trial in Auckland to help homeowners recycle and dispose of their unwanted paint and paint packaging. Thousands and thousands of cans were returned to the Resene PaintWise service, some empty, many partially full of paint. Waterborne paint was donated to community groups, metal cans were recycled and solventborne paint sent to solvent recovery to allow the solvents to be reused in other industries.

Responsible recovery progressed rapidly following the 2004 trial, with a permanent Resene PaintWise service being launched in Auckland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty on 1 September 2005, in the South Island on 1 August 2006 and the lower North Island in 2007. Residents in those areas can bring in unwanted paint and paint packaging, any brand, to selected Resene ColorShops. A PaintWise mobile truck service visits the stores, processing the materials received before returning to its depot.

Good quality Resene paint is provided free to community groups, other waterborne paint is consolidated and provided to uses such as graffiti obliteration work, metal packaging is recycled and solventborne paint is sent to solvent recovery. Returned paint is also being incorporated into Resene Construction System RenderPrep, which uses the properties of the paint help seal and aid in the curing of plaster over masonry surfaces.

In the two years to end of 2008, over 300,000 packs were collected from Resene ColorShops and over 100,000kg from council depots. Of this, over 120,000kg of steel was recycled, over 80,000 litres of solventborne paint was sent to solvent recovery so the solvents could be reused and over 60,000 litres of waterborne paint was donated to community groups, much of which was used to cover graffiti.

The programme doesn’t stop there though. The Resene PaintWise service is proactively being expanded to make paint and paint packaging recovery a reality for more and more paint users.

Bring unwanted paint and paint containers into your local Resene ColorShop and let us recycle or dispose of them responsibly. Resene will offer good quality Resene paint to community groups for reuse, recycle packaging materials that are recyclable, send solventborne paints to solvent recovery, find alternative uses for waterborne paints, such as graffiti abatement, and dispose of the rest for you.

Selected Resene ColorShops have been designated as Resene PaintWise Collection Centres. Drop off your unwanted paint and paint containers to any of these designated Resene ColorShops at any time during their opening hours.

Maintenance

Regular Home Maintenance is important. The Resene Construction Systems Maintenance Guide has been designed to provide you with peace of mind when it comes to looking after your property investment. A little time & effort now can prevent expensive repairs in the long term. Plan what maintenance you propose to undertake.

Take into consideration the type of work that is required, & the time of year you want to get it done. Most external maintenance is completed in the summer as this is generally the best weather for drying and for general outside work such as gardening. If you are planning on fixing brackets, security lights or any other fixture to the exterior make sure you have the skills & equipment to undertake the task.

If you are unsure call a specialist.

If it relates to penetration through the Resene Construction Systems exterior cladding call us direct on 0800 50 70 40 – a simple phone call could save you time & money later.

Maintenance sounds difficult & costly – in fact, it can be quite the opposite.

It can become difficult & costly if it is never undertaken, by which time other issues may have arisen that could have been acted upon sooner through regular general maintenance.

There are virtually no “maintenance free” exterior claddings on the market, in fact, almost nothing is maintenance-free – many people tend to throw things away these days when they breakdown as it is cheaper than getting it fixed. This is not the case with your exterior cladding, you can’t just throw it away, it is protecting your family & your belongings. It is quite interesting to note that most people maintain their garden, & vehicle so they look good. Yet when it comes to cleaning the exterior windows, & walls or clearing leaves from a blocked gutter it seems to get left alone as it is perceived to be “difficult” or there are better things to do, maybe the dirt & leaves will simply dissapear one day. This generally isn’t the case & regular maintenance is required.

One of your major life investments is property so why not look after it?

Resene Construction Systems has produced a complete maintenance guide – this package is designed to advise you of your obligations as the owner not only for the long term performance & look of your Resene Construction Systems exterior cladding, but to comply with the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code.

General Maintenance is a requirement of the Resene Construction Systems Performance Guarantee.

Your Project

Resene Construction Systems have developed a comprehensive range of premium plasters, facade systems & construction products that have been designed and tested for New Zealand.

System Selection

All Resene Construction Systems cladding systems are supplied and installed by registered Resene Construction Systems plasterers who are qualified and licensed to apply our products.

Each Resene Construction Systems system has different requirements in terms of application and installation from our ‘DRYZONE’ cavity-based cladding systems through to rendering solutions over brick or masonry substrates.

All Resene Construction Systems systems include supply and installation right through to the finished texture style, in your favourite Resene colour.

A minimum of 6 hand-applied layers, which is twice as many as some of our competitors.

All backed up by a range of products and services that will enhance the system for the life of the building.

Specification

Many factors make up the specification all of which when combined accurately during the construction stages will make for a shining example of craftsmanship, and ultimately durability for the life of the structure.

Your Architectural or Design professional will specify our selected system to your project. It is imperative that the specification is completed in accordance with the Architectural & Design detailing.

Our premium Rockcote & Plaster Systems range of plasters and facade systems are rigorously tested to comply with the New Zealand Building Code.
A lot of time is spent before construction starts getting all the detailing right for your project— numerous meetings that fine-tune the original concept.

During construction, the exterior cladding must be constructed and installed as per the selected Resene Construction Systems system, architect or designers instructions. This includes other trades who are working on the project, such as roofers, plumbers, electricians etc.

Most importantly, any sub-contractor who needs to make a penetration through the cladding for wiring or pipes etc must ensure that the penetration is formed and sealed according to the specification. Neither the B.C.A. nor Resene Construction Systems will pass any deviation without written consent from the architect, designer or Resene Construction Systems.

Buildings may be designed and built to parameters other than those contained in the NZBC, provided they still meet the requirements of the Building Code. Such building designs are termed Alternative Solutions. They can only be used when the territorial authority is satisfied, on reasonable grounds, that the building would comply with the Building Code if the work is completed in accordance with this design.

Guarantees

The Resene Construction Systems Performance Guarantee provides you with the assurance that your exterior is backed up by one of New Zealand’s largest privately-owned companies – Resene Paints Ltd.

The Resene Construction Systems Performance Guarantee process starts once you accept your registered plasterers' quote. It includes on-site assistance and documentation that help to ensure your Resene Construction Systems cladding system meets or exceeds the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. When you accept your quote, we will be advised by your registered plasterer of your project. Your project will be given a unique pre-construction code, which will identify your project throughout the installation process.

Documentation needs to be completed by the plasterer to the satisfaction of Resene Construction Systems to ensure compliance with the specified exterior cladding system(s); Pre-construction code information (supplied by your registered plasterer to Resene Construction Systems on quote acceptance).

It is the responsibility of your registered plasterer to complete any pre/post cladding documentation in conjunction with the main contractor.

When the above information is complete and returned to us, we will issue directly to you the ‘Resene Construction Systems Care’ pack. This contains some valuable information, which should be kept with other important construction records. In particular, your exterior cladding producer statement which your local territorial authority requires as part of their Code of Compliance process.

Your Resene Construction Systems Care Package includes;

  • Maintenance Guide
  • 15 Year Manufacturers Guarantee
  • 5 Year Workmanship Warranty
  • Producer Statement
  • LBP Statement

Copies of the producer statement, and the Resene Construction Systems project assessor report will be
