Sanctuary Pergolas designs, builds and installs bespoke fixed-roof pergolas for Auckland homes and selected commercial projects.

Rather than starting with a standard kit, we start with the site. The architecture, intended use, structure, roof, daylight, drainage and integrated details are resolved together so the finished pergola belongs to its setting.

We take residential projects from the first brief through design, build, installation and handover. We also work with architects, designers and builders, from early concepts to clearly defined packages within wider project teams.

Our completed work spans residential outdoor rooms, hospitality terraces, recreation venues and workplace canopies. Share your suburb, photos, approximate dimensions and intended use to begin a project conversation.

Who we are

Sanctuary Pergolas is an Auckland-based, family-founded design-and-build team focused on custom fixed-roof pergolas and outdoor rooms. We work with homeowners, commercial clients, architects, designers and builders who want a structure designed around its setting and intended use.

Every project begins with a useful brief: the site, photos, approximate dimensions, how the space should work and any known constraints. From there, we resolve the form, structure, roof approach, daylight, drainage, connections and integrated options as one coordinated design. Sanctuary builds and installs the agreed structure, and can coordinate project-specific engineering, the building-consent process and connected trades where these form part of the scope.

Our role can range from developing an early idea to delivering a defined package within a consultant-led project. Responsibilities, dependencies and interfaces are agreed before fabrication, giving homeowners and project teams a clear path from first conversation to handover.

Our Story

Sanctuary began with a practical problem at founder Bruce Breetvelt’s family bach: a generous deck that was often too exposed to use comfortably. Faced with a long lead time, Bruce drew on his background in engineering and teaching design to build the pergola himself. The result showed him there was room for a more considered, site-specific approach.

That idea still guides the work today. Each project is shaped around the architecture, intended use and conditions that need to be resolved, then carried through to installation by the Sanctuary team.

Sanctuary is based in Auckland and considers selected projects up to about a three-hour drive away when the scope is a good fit.

“★★★★★ “Had a Sanctuary Pergola installed at Waiheke, great guys doing the job and the pergola looks amazing, very good quality materials and design. Very happy I got a bespoke design and not a mass production product.”
