Meet the brothers behind our name. Wok and Don have been working as a dynamic duo for 29 years. They are the heart of the operation, that prides itself on solid family values, old school work ethics, and kiwi ingenuity at its best… and they both play a mean game of golf.

Wok grew up in Auckland, the youngest of 4 siblings. He was passionate about rugby, playing the guitar and driving his Austin A40. After leaving Auckland Grammar School at 16, he got a position with Alex Harvey Industries, a packaging solutions company. He was quick to rise through the ranks and quickly became a valued Sales Manager for the company. But his itchy feet prevailed, and with an offer from brother Don to get on the tools and join his building team, Wok found a new challenge.

Their main specialty at this time was low cost blocks of units. A few years later, with the arrival of his 2 daughters Monique & Natalie & son Anthony, the decision was made to relocate to Norfolk Island to be closer to family. A memorable time spent with extended family and an amazing small knit community, fishing, beaching, golfing and living on “island time” was a blast. While on Norfolk, Wok supervised the government construction team for 4 Years, before starting his own successful Building & Joinery business. After the birth of his second son Gareth, and with his kids schooling needs in mind, Wok returned to Auckland in 1985 and began his partnership with brother Don.

Music has always been a true passion for Wok, having played in a number of bands since his early teens. Family events are always relished with Wok strumming his guitar, banjo or ukulele and having kids and grandkids joining him in jam sessions. Woks other joys in life, other than his treasured family are his 1975 Chevrolet Corvette and travelling the globe with his wife Ellen. 

Wok heads up the Project Management side of the business, liasing with clients, architects, engineers and consultants to ensure your project is constructed in a timely manner while meeting the quality standards set by our company.

Don spent his secondary schooling at Auckland Grammar, where he was an extremely capable sports person, representing the school at senior level in Cricket and Athletics. And would have done so in Rugby had he had a few more inches in height. 

Dons initial work experience was in banking and then in Time and Motion study with Alex Harvey & Sons. This gave him great experience in the commercial world from both a financial and production orientated point of view. After a time in Real Estate, Don decided to start his own property development company and completed many projects throughout Auckland in the townhouse unit development field. This proved extremely successful and Don was able to put work to one side and take his wife and 2 daughters, Jane and Melanie, throughout the Pacific on a sailing voyage of adventure. On returning to New Zealand after 2 years away, Don and Wok began their business relationship in the building field. 

Dons’ passion for boating has also led him to invest in a canal boat in Europe and he does his best to get to Amsterdam to explore on a yearly basis. He is a keen and accomplished golfer, playing weekly, with a handicap of 9. The family music tradition continues with Don and he can be heard strumming the ukulele at any social event. 

Don is always looking for his next entrepreneurial challenge and has recently embarked on a special fruit development operation in Turangi. 

Don takes on all financial aspects of the operation and is keenly involved with the process of administration systems and staff wellbeing.

Sun – General Manager

Sun has realised what the big wide world of the commercial construction industry is all about and done so in very quick time. He is proving to be an extremely valuable member of the team, being able to communicate with staff, subcontractors and clients in an extremely professional manner. Sun’s activities outside work include Baseball and sourcing properties and he has his first baby on the way – Yah!

PJ – Construction Manager

PJ has been with Stehr Brothers since 1994. He is results driven, a true “people person” and will go above and beyond to keep our clients happy. In his spare time you can find PJ out on his boat fishing, watching his kids compete in their representative sports or managing the Auckland Marist U19 Rugby team.

Natalie – Office Manager

Nat is based in the office engine room and is dedicated to providing the best service possible to clients, staff, council and consultants. She is driven by the desire to make you, our valued customers building experience the best that it can be, assisting with any queries or requests, while ensuring all administration requirements of your project are dealt with proficiently. On a personal note, Nat loves getting her toes in the sand, spontaneous weekends away with her hubby on their Harley motorbike and the constant chaos of her blended family of 7.

Melanie – Accounts / Admin

Mel is our wonderful floater, who balances her young family, working from home and joining the office team when required. Mel expertly looks after the implementation of new systems and processes, provides accounts support and is our VIP pay lady. She is passionate about numbers and ensuring the financial side of your project is kept on track. Mel’s two wee girls, aged 6 and 3, keep her busy. She is also keenly involved in her local playcentre, plans in motion to build a new home and squeezing in AUT study when she can.

Eammon – Site Supervisor

Eammon will do whatever it takes to meet the programme. He is a home grown construction supervisor, who has carried out his apprenticeship, attained LBP status, and risen to the position of Site Supervisor, all while working for Stehr Brothers. Eammon is a keen soccer player, and has played 1st division football for a number of years. He is a doting dad of 2 wee boys and he often gets mistaken for Michael Jordan ( yeah right ! )

Doug – Site Supervisor

Doug has a lifetime experience in Construction, having run hismown company, as well as previously managing his father’s operation. He has recently supervised the total renovation of a 900m2 home in Whitford. Doug has amazing family values that transport into his daily routine. He is always meticulous in his attention to detail and management of subtrades. In his spare time he is a keen fisherman and loves his family camping holidays.

Andrew – Heavy Machinery Specialist / Site Safe Specialist

Andy is a valued member of the team, coming from a Construction Management background. He operates on all sites and therefore has contact with most clients where he displays communication skills that reflect his previous experience. He is a keen family man who loves taking his caravan away for weekends in the quiet NZ countryside.

DQ – National Trade Cert Qualified Carpenter

DQ is a friendly and joyful member of the team, who is going through the training process with us. He is very pleased with the versatility of work that he has been able to be involved with. DQ is a keen gym bunny and is passionate about his overall health & fitness.

Jesen – National Trade Cert Qualified Carpenter

An enjoyable, hardworking member of the team. Jesen is from Niue Island and was involved with the government construction team on the Island and progressed through the ranks to later join a New Zealand construction company, who were operating there. He is a family man, who enjoys hunting and fishing.

For the majority of people in New Zealand, they won’t undertake more than 1 renovation or new home build in their lifetime. Because of this, the building process can be quite new to them, and daunting in its own right. That’ why we put together these 7 steps to show you exactly how Stehr Brothers will work with you from the very first contact.

Step 1 – Nice to meet you.

The first step is to call or email us. Your initial contact with us provides the opportunity to tell us all about your project. During this call we’ll ask you a few detailed questions to get a better understanding of your project, and so we can informatively advise you how to move forward. If we can help you, we will schedule in a time to meet with you in person for your FREE 1 hour Planning Consultation.

Step 2 – Planning Consultation

During this 1 hour consultationwe will discuss your expectations, your proposed budgets and timeframes and draw as much information from you as possible. We aim to fully understand your vision. During this meeting we encourage you to bring any house plans, section information, ideas or relevant information.

Step 3 – House Plans

If you’ve already got house plans, we’ll provide you with a detailed proposal, so you can see exactly what’s involved in your dream home, renovation or building project. This will give you a transparent budget for all works required.. If you don’t already have house plans, we can put you in touch with a number of talented architects or draughtsman that we work alongside. They will be able to create concepts and designs for your vision.

Step 4 – Acceptance

Once you’re happy with the solutions provided and our final costing, we’ll get the paperwork taken care of and provide you with:

• A Certified Builders comprehensive Contract
• A 10 year Certified Builders guarantee application form
• A detailed project timeline
• A Payment plan

Step 5 – The Build

On receipt of required documentation, payment of deposit and council consent, the construction work commences. We will introduce you to our Building Foreman who will be another point of contact during the construction process. Behind the scenes, our Purchasing Team will begin ordering and fabricating all the necessary materials to ensure your time frame is observed. You’ll be kept fully informed of how the building work is progressing. You will receive a monthly progress claim invoice for payment.

Step 6 – Completion & Maintenance

When all works are completed and council inspections have been finalised and building approved, you will be invited to attend a final walk through with your Building Foreman. This enables you to discuss any items which need to be addressed before you move in and ensure you are fully satisfied with the results. Final payments are completed, all of the boxes are ticked, and you’ll get a full commercial clean prior to you moving in. We will provide you with all guarantees and certifications for your project and continue our commitment to you and your project, with our 12 month maintenance period.
