About us

Since 1906 Templeton Engineering has been servicing the Wanaka and the Upper Clutha with all aspects of engineering.

Templeton Engineering first opened its doors in 1906.
Things were different back then, with the work of Blacksmith being the main source of business. The original forge still stands today in our busy workshop and is often lit for special occasions.

Garry Templeton is a 5th generation family member of the Templeton Engineering brand and recently in 2020 Matt Read has been introduced as a director. Matt has a strong following in Wanaka, the Upper Clutha and wider Central Otago for his skill and reputation for excellence and pride in the detail of his work.

Our Story

Serving the Wanaka community with all engineering needs for more than 100 years.

Templeton Engineering in Albert Town, Wanaka, has long held a reputation for superior customer service and getting things done. Although it’s been 115 years since James Templeton first opened the doors in 1906, the same brand promise is kept today with the current Templeton Engineering team: delivering a high standard of work at a fair price.

It’s true that skilled workmanship and expertise has remained constant throughout the years but the key reason why Templeton Engineering is still Wanaka’s engineering “go-to” is simply because of our people.

At Templeton Engineering, our customers know that we are always happy to help with projects of any size – no matter how big or small – and they can always call in for a yarn with the engineers and current directors Garry Templeton and Matt Read.

It’s this personal communication and reliable, honest service that keeps the Wanaka and wider Upper Clutha community coming back, decade after decade. Our customers are content in the knowledge that they will receive a high-quality job, on time, and as per the quote.

Engineering is a skill that’s inherent to both Garry and Matt. Hailing from engineering families, they harnessed their welding skills from a young age, pottering around the busy workshops owned by their fathers and grandfathers.

Today, Garry and Matt have more than 60 years’ combined engineering experience and they share their vast expertise with a team of qualified tradesmen in an environment that’s lively and energetic. It may seem an oxymoron for a business still located in the landmark heritage building on the riverbank in “old” Albert Town, but local enthusiasm for the historic brand, particularly with the introduction of Matt and Sarah Read in 2020, has never waned.

Together with Garry, Matt and Sarah are guiding Wanaka’s Templeton Engineering into the future, with many exciting opportunities on the horizon …

History

The first business entries were recorded by James Templeton in 1895, when the original Templetons was situated on the lakefront of Lake Wanaka, where it continued trading until 1899. In 1903 James began trading again, this time in Albert Town on the opposite side of the river as to where it is today. On 26th April 1906 the first entry was made from its current location, 21 Wicklow Terrace in Albert Town, where we are still situated today.

Charles (Chas) Templeton’s ledgers began in 1913, through to 1954 at which time his sons David and Ralph joined the business. Ralph then took over in 1964 and traded through until 1996 when his son Garry took over the business. In 2020 Garry introduced Mathew Read to the business.

In 1906 when Templeton Engineering first opened its doors things were different, with the work of Blacksmith being the main source of business. The original forge still stands today in our busy workshop and is often lit for special occasions.

Over time, the business has evolved with society and we have continued to meet the demand of technology with the latest in equipment and gadgets. Not to forget the old-timers of equipment that we still have operational, as they still serve a purpose now and again for that specialised technical job.
