The Brick Pit’s in-house custom feature blends prevent banding and patchiness and are the choice of architects, builders and discerning home owners throughout Australia and New Zealand.

50 Years of Customer Satisfaction

The Brick Pit began trading in 1975, long before recycled brick was considered cool and fashionable, and before words like ‘sustainability’, 'circular economy' and 'embodied carbon footprint’ were part of the national conversation.

Since 1975, The Brick Pit has been supplying architects, designers, homeowners, builders, landscapers and shopfitters in Australia and overseas with premium, recycled bricks for residential, commercial and landscaping projects including custom homes, restaurants, cafes, commercial, retail, and residential complexes, council parks and outdoor spaces, leading education facilities and eco-resorts.

The Brick Pit is a full-service brick recycler supplying only the finest recycled bricks and advising on brick selection, finishes, colour matching and quantities. We offer the following recycled brick products and specialty product lines.

Some notable projects include UOW Sustainable Buildings Research Centre – Australia’s first 6 Star Green Star Rated building, UOW iAccelerate building, Sandstone Point Hotel (QLD), Sydney Olympic Park Jacaranda Square, the Google Headquarters in Pyrmont, multiple HIA and MBA award-winning homes and installations within the Merivale Group including Ivy, Mr Wong, Coogee Pavilion, Papi Chulo and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I order a specific colour?

We can guarantee bricks within a specific colour range given ample lead time.

We can help you find the colour you’re after.

Blending the bricks is key, and our team can help you with this. Curated feature blends are The Brick Pit’s unique offering. You choose a blend per square metre of the bricks you are after. Every layer of the pallet (50 bricks per square metre) has the same formula, so the bricklayer can take from the pallet with consistency of colour blending.

Can I order in large quantities?

We can supply 100,000+ bricks with enough lead time and planning, and a 2 to 3-month lead time is preferable for large projects.

When we promise a large custom order, we know we can supply it.

We can even store your bricks for you and supply a quantity each week.

Can I see the bricks and choose them myself?

Yes, we encourage you to visit The Brick Pit in Smithfield (Sydney’s west) to hand-select your bricks and specify your colour range.

We have a wide range of stock on site, curated in various colour grades, so you can get the finish and look you are after.

Can we restore the original colour of the bricks?

Yes, acid wash restores the original colour of the bricks after building. Most people want the old, heritage look and feel of recycled bricks, and if you acid wash it, you might lose some of this.

Where are the bricks sourced from?

The bricks are from demolished homes in Sydney built before the 1960s.

Each brick has unmatched aesthetic and historic appeal and tells its own story.

Keeping bricks in use at their highest value also has cost and environmental savings.

Are there any concerns with contamination from hazardous materials?

The bricks are each hand-sorted by our team.

We can’t accept bricks exposed to dangerous materials like asbestos.

Painted bricks (graffiti bricks) are separated from non-painted bricks and are popular to add character in our feature blends, or they can be left out.

Is there much wastage of the bricks supplied on pallets?

The Brick Pit thoroughly sorts the bricks so there is zero waste per pallet. The upcycled bricks may have slightly chipped edges. During transport, one or two bricks could break but when they leave the yard, they will not be broken.

How are the bricks delivered?

We deliver to the kerb on pallets of 500 bricks. Bricks are delivered by semi-trailer which carries 12 pallets, (6000 bricks), and an all-terrain forklift. A smaller rigid truck which carries 6 pallets (3000 bricks per load), and an all-terrain forklift can be arranged for narrow access. Crane truck delivery is available on request if needed.

How heavy are the bricks?

Solid dry pressed bricks weigh 4 kg each and extruded bricks 3 kg each.

How do I calculate how many bricks to order?

You will need 40 bricks per square metre of area for paving and 50 bricks per square metre (single course) for face brick walls and retaining walls, Call 02 9681 7666 if you have any questions.

What is the lead time for receiving the bricks?

Lead times vary depending on the season, the demand and the quantity of bricks required. Under normal circumstances our lead time is two weeks from the date we receive your deposit. Large orders may have a longer lead time while smaller orders may be supplied sooner. Please ask when you place your order.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

No minimum. Order just a few bricks or tens of thousands. If it's important to you, it's important to us!

Do you do brick matching?

We do brick matches for pre-1950s clay bricks and sandstocks. We match bricks from photographs but remember, the quality of the pics is critical as the brick match will be done to match the pics you provide. For a photo brick match please email a digital photo of approximately 1 sq. metre of wall space in good light and a second close-up photo showing only 2-3 bricks. The email address is on our contact page or phone (02) 9681 7666.

Where We Work

The Brick Pit serves regions far and wide, from NSW and QLD to ACT, VIC, SA, WA, and even New Zealand. Offering genuine Australian recycled bricks, our commitment to quality and sustainability knows no borders. Architects, builders, and homeowners trust us for our reliable service and genuine products, making a positive impact wherever our bricks are laid.

Transforming Brick Demolition Waste

The Brick Pit contributes to reducing landfill and CO2 emissions by recycling millions of lime-mortar clay bricks for reuse every year.

“Every time you reuse 2,000 old bricks instead of new bricks, you save the environment 1 tonne of CO2.”

  • The business model is upcycling – also known as recycling for reuse.
  • Upcycling is superior to other methods of recycling that destroy the original product.
  • Upcycling is simply processing a product to be reused in its original form.
  • Reuse is the most energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable type of recycling.
  • Bricks on demolition sites are separated from general waste and brought to The Brick Pit.
  • After being sorted, cleaned, graded and then blended to architect and customer requirements, the bricks are returned to the marketplace for reuse in new building and landscaping projects.

Brick recycling worldwide is riding a wave of unprecedented growth and development that reflects a firm commitment by consumers and governments to reduce landfill and CO2 emissions. The manufacture of new bricks is well-known to be a highly energy and resource-intensive process that depletes the environment. As a result, demand for recycled lime-mortar brick is rising. The Brick Pit’s Brick Rescue initiative rewards and encourages the recycling for reuse of lime-mortar brick retrieved from demolition sites.
