Tongue & Groove is driven by a mission to redefine the potential of timber.

We have combined the strength and character of solid oak with an innovative and sustainable production process to create the first three-layered, solid engineered oak board in Australia. Our versatile range expands the potential for engineered oak timber flooring boards, empowering you to bring the natural beauty of oak to floors, stairs, walls, and ceilings.

Inspired by the inherent strength and beauty of solid oak, we’ve redefined engineered timber boards.

Our Story

Since the beginning, Tongue & Groove has been driven by a desire to revolutionise the flooring industry with Australia’s first three-layered solid oak board. Today, we remain dedicated to creating products that exceed expectations and redefine the potential of engineered timber to make it stronger, more beautiful, and more sustainable.

Tongue & Groove has an unwavering commitment to excellence in all we do – an ethos that has built a solid foundation for every aspect of our business. We set out to reimagine engineered timber, and have built a reputation for the unmatched quality, strength, stability and character of our finely engineered boards that are crafted from three layers of solid oak. This unique layered construction – the first in Australia – was developed by founder Richard Karsay, who was inspired by his experience working as a craftsman and flooring installer for more than two decades.

When we launched our first flagship showroom in Sydney in 2007, our revolutionary product range empowered architects and designers to celebrate the beauty of oak in new ways. By combining the natural character of solid timber with the strength and stability of engineered timber using three layers of solid European oak, we created a new standard of flooring.

The unmatched strength and stability of our boards makes them suitable for use not only on floors, but also stairs, walls, joinery, and ceilings. With a curated collection of 16 colours and finishes and sizes that range up to 400mm in width and 5m in length, our boards have the power to transform and enliven interior spaces.

Today, we have showrooms in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, and dedicated teams in Adelaide, Perth and New York, enabling us to support projects across Australia and beyond. Our dedicated team boasts more than 50 years of combined experience in the flooring industry, and has collaborated with leading designers and architects to bring the charm of European oak to a diverse range of projects around the world. Most importantly, our original commitment to honouring the nobility, beauty, and strength of European oak is still at the heart of everything we do.

Our Oak

A new standard in layered flooring

Our three-layered solid oak boards are designed to help you bring your creative vision to life, with a diverse range of formats, sizes, finishes, and colours. Our proven, sustainable process combines the timeless beauty of solid European oak with the strength, stability, and precision of engineered timber to set a new standard in layered timber. These unique boards can be applied to almost any surface to elevate a space with the beauty and warmth of natural oak.

Noble, natural and strong – there’s no limit to the possibilities.

Our unique three-layered, solid timber construction enhances the natural strength and beauty of European oak to create a new standard in engineered timber boards.

Solid hardwood

Our boards are crafted from three layers of solid European oak – rather than plywood – so you know what’s beneath the surface will perform as robustly as what you see on top.

Rich in character

Nothing compares to the rich texture and grain of natural timber – and our boards are designed to celebrate the unique beauty of European oak.

Curated colours

Our versatile collection of 16 colours and styles includes unique treatments, such as smoking and reactive stains, hard wax, and natural UV oil finishes.

Graceful ageing

The neutral undertones of our solid timber boards will develop a distinctive, natural patina over time that will only get better with age.

Natural Beauty

Oak is an organic material, and each tree boasts a unique character rich in texture, grain and knots. Our boards are designed to preserve and enhance this natural beauty.

Sustainability

Respecting the source

We are committed to protecting our forests and our world for generations to come. We have set new standards in the industry for best-practice in material sourcing, waste and emission minimisation, and recycling – and we only partner with suppliers who share our values so you can trust our products at every stage of the process.

An ongoing commitment

At Tongue & Groove, we are proud to have sustainability at the heart of all aspects of our business. Our products adhere to the highest possible environmental standards, from the moment the timber is responsibly sourced from European plantations to our innovative manufacturing processes, and the delivery of the product to our customers.

We believe timber is a precious natural resource that deserves our respect. Our oak is responsibly sourced from plantations throughout Europe that practise sustainable forestry and are certified according to the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Chain of Custody Standards. To ensure the highest standards, our products can be FSC Chain of Custody Certified on request.

This care and respect for the timber extends throughout the manufacturing process. We have developed a new standard of engineered flooring that uses up to 70% repurposed materials. With three layers of solid European oak, our process makes use of parts of the tree that would otherwise go to waste.

Each board is then finished using WOCA biodegradable plant-based oils or a water-based lacquer. These 100% natural finishes and the glue we use for bonding our three layers of solid oak are non-toxic and low in VOC emissions, so they are safe for both our families and our environment.

“The flooring provided an elegant canvas for the rest of the interior. Because we worked on a palette of layering different tones and textures, it helped contribute to a calm, soft space with the durability and longevity we were after. The interior features veneer, cabinetry, stone and brass accents throughout. The Tongue & Groove flooring gave a lovely, soft coloured backdrop for the rest of the neutral tones to work together.”
