Trendy Glass & Mirror in Christchurch is a family-owned business, steeped in history spanning three generations. Back in 1918, William Thom Senior pioneered mirror silvering in New Zealand, and we continue his legacy of quality craftsmanship, affordability, and friendly customer service to this day. With a highly skilled team of glaziers, quality materials, and the latest technology our company produces ripple-free mirrors and flawless glass products to customers New Zealand-wide.
The current owner, Damien Thom started out in the family business back when he was a child, helping out by doing odd jobs around the factory. As he got older Damien took more of an interest in the day-to-day operations, eventually managing the business and later buying the company from his father William, so it looks like the family legacy of quality, affordability, and service is set to continue.

Do I need to hang my mirror on a stud?
Not on normal to large mirrors, our mirrors come complete with plasterboard fixings (and instructions) which are safe to use on standard plasterboard. Oversized or very large mirrors are supplied with suitable fixtures on the mirror to support the weight, For very large mirrors we would recommend drilling into a stud as the plasterboard may not be strong enough for the weight. Free advice and support is available.
What is a warranty?
The warranty document can be found on the “Resources” tab on our website. All our mirrors come with a warranty, the length of time depending on the type and whether it is for residential or commercial use.
Is the mirror I want in stock?
Generally, we have all standard-sized mirrors in stock, however, should your order and there be a supply issue we will contact you with an ETA.
How does the mirror attach/fix to my wall?
Almost all the bathroom mirrors have a concealed fixing attached to the back of the mirror which slots over mounting brackets or screw heads that are screwed into the wall.
Glue fix bathroom mirrors are also available which can be convenient to avoid drilling into tiles etc.
How far off the wall will the mirror sit out from the wall?
On frameless bathroom mirrors there is normally a 7mm air gap in between the wall and the back of the mirror. Frameless mirrors are 4-5mm thick. Holes and Domes mirrors, Glue fix mirrors are fitted flush on the wall. Framed mirrors and LED mirrors vary in thickness.
What is the screw/fixing position?
Please check the product data sheets which can be found on our website on the individual mirror product image pages. If it does not contain all the information you need please contact us and we will measure it.
Does the mirror hang horizontally or vertically?
Our mirrors have fixings that allow them to be hung both vertically (portrait) and horizontally (landscape).
How high should my mirror be?
Allow 150-200mm above the vanity before measuring the height. Measure upwards until everyone in the family is visible in the mirror. This is usually around 900mm.
How heavy is my mirror?
4mm thick frameless mirror weighs 10kg per m2, 5mm thick thick frameless weighs 12.5kg per m2. Allow approx ½ a kg for metal fixings if applicable.
LED and framed mirrors all vary. Please feel free to contact us for mirror weight.
Can you cut down my existing mirror or glass?
Mirror - Yes we offer a cut-down and resize mirror service, a really old mirror can have flaky paint on the back so sometimes it peels off when the edges are processed.
Note- we cannot process the edges of the mirror with metal fixings near the edge, so the mirror generally needs to be cut at a position inside the metal fixing.
Glass - Yes if it is not toughened glass.
Can I use my mirrors as a bathroom vanity splashback?
Yes however the water splash from the tap will damage the mirror prematurely over time, if a mirror is used as a splashback the warranty is void.
LED Mirror Frequently Asked Questions
What colour is the light?
For custom-made LED mirrors, you have a choice of three fixed colour lights;
Warm 3000-3500 K, Natural 4050-4350 K, Cool 6000-6500 K.
The back-lit off-the-shelf stock LED mirrors have interchangeable light colours of which the colour can change between 3000 K and 6500 K using the sensor button.
Off-the-shelf stock LED mirrors which do not have interchangeable LED colours are a cool light 6000 K.
What is the difference between a back-lit LED mirror and a frosted LED mirror?
Backlit LED mirrors the light shines out the back and sides of the mirror only, it has a relaxing ambient feel.
Frosted LED mirrors has a frosted border on the mirror, of which the light shines through and on most out the side and backs. It provides more practical lighting out the front than a backlit mirror.
How do I connect the power to an LED mirror?
Many of our LED mirrors come with a 1 m lead and power plug, however, for permanent use, we recommend hard-wiring the LED mirror into a light switch. When you turn the switch on both LED light and mirror demister will work. A qualified Electrician is needed to hardwire in the LED mirror. Once the mirror position is determined the Electrician can in advance run the wire in the wall to approximately the centre of the mirror.
My LED mirror is dim, what is the problem?
Many of our LED mirrors are dimmable, generally to increase brightness you simply hold your finger on the sensor switch, however, please check the instruction/operation manual which can be found on the specific product page for the mirror in question.
Splashback Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get this splashback in another size or custom-made to size?
Both Kitchen & Bathroom Splashbacks have a range of standard sizes and both can be custom-made to size.
What colour can I order? Can I have a colour different from your colour range?
Yes, you can have any Resene or Dulux colour.
Painted glass looks different to a painted wall and there are batch variations when the paint is mixed. If ordering the same coloured glass as the wall we recommend going 2 shades different as an attempted match of wall and paint doesn’t generally work.
What is the maximum length for a splashback?
3660 mm long.
How do I measure my own splashback?
For the handy DIY type please refer to the self-measure splashback guide on the resources tab.
Can I cut a splashback or can you resize it?
No, it is toughened glass.
Can I order a splashback with holes for plugs and corners cut off?
Yes, we can supply virtually any shape, holes, cut-outs, notches, curves etc., on our CNC waterjet cutting machine or CNC Intermac glass cutting machine.
Do I need toughened glass?
If you have a gas hob, yes, it is required by law. If you are putting a splashback into your bathroom or laundry it is not always required but recommended for high-use spaces where they might get easily damaged.
Should I order an ultra clear (low iron) glass or normal toughened glass?
Ultra-clear glass has a low iron content which ensures the glass is very clear and consistent.
Normal glass has a much higher iron content meaning the glass is somewhat green. This is obvious when painting light colours and the colour looks greenish, it is important to use ultra clear glass or the colour appears greenish.
We always recommend ultra-clear for any painted glass however normal glass costs approximately 10% less and is suitable for very dark colours.
Is there a difference in the colour of the glass?
Yes there are 2 different types of glass typically used for splashbacks, Normal Clear Glass and Ultra Clear Glass. If you want a light colour, matching an existing colour or want the true Resene or Dulux colour you need to use the Ultra Clear Glass. If you are using a darker colour or not too worried then you can use the Normal Clear Glass. Still not sure? If you tell us the name of your colour we can look it up and give you a recommendation.
How do I attach my painted splashback to the wall?
The splashback is bonded using a clear neutral cure silicon (sold separately). We recommend also using 2 sided tape to hold the splashback against the wall whilst it bonds. Other strong tapes can be used, such as duct tape around the glass edge but this leaves residue on the glass which takes time to remove and can also tear off wall paint.
I want a clear splashback, how do I attach it to the wall?
Clear splashbacks cannot be glued on as the glue will show through the clear glass, the splashback can be pre-drilled with holes and supplied with mounting domes/screw caps.
