Do electricians do appliance repairs?
No we don’t repair appliances. We get inquiries from people who need their oven or fridge fixed and we recommend you go to those experts.
If you have a Fisher and Paykel appliance, they have their own appliance repair team who can help you out.
If you have another brand our advice is to Google ‘appliance repair Wellington’ and this will bring up a number of companies that specialise in fixing appliances. There are specialised companies based in Wellington, Lower Hutt and Porirua.
What’s a Certificate of Compliance?
What’s a CoC?
It’s a Certificate of Compliance and under New Zealand regulations electricians issue, this to certify installations or part installations, including fixed wiring and fitting new power points. The CoC falls under Part 1 or 2 of AS/NZS 3000
What does having a CoC mean?
It guarantees the work:
- has been completed by a licensed electrician {registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB)}
- meets NZ safety standards and codes set by law, and has been tested.
Keep your CoC in a safe place as a record of the work done. You might need it for insurance claims or when selling your home.
What’s an ESC?
For routine maintenance work, such as replacing sockets and light fittings or repairing appliances, you need an Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC). All CoCs also need an ESC accompanying them.
The ESC provides a legally recognisable statement that the connected installation or part installation is safe to use following the electrical work. It falls under Regulation 74A of the Electrical (Safety) Regulations.
How do I know what’s required for my job?
Your electrician will advise which certificate(s) you need.
When is an electrical safety inspection needed?
Some electrical work also needs to be inspected by a licensed electrical inspector who will issue a Record of Inspection (under part 6A(2) of Electrical (Safety) Regulations 2010).
Any work on the main switchboard, the main cable, and the main earth requires inspection. We arrange this for you. Keep the inspection report in a safe place for your records.
Does this cost extra?
Because we contract in the inspector and pay them the cost is additional. We will advise you about this when quoting your job.
What about CoCs and ESCs, do they cost?
There is a standard cost to these. Ask your electrician when quoting the job. It should be itemised in the invoicing.
What electrical checks or documentation do you recommend for buying a home?
We recommend having a licensed electrician or inspector verify that all installations, outbuildings and electrical equipment are electrically safe. They’ll also identify electrical work that may need to be done.
Ask the vendor about electrical work done on the property and to see all CoCs. From this you can see if a licensed electrical worker has done the work. The CoC is also important for liability and insurance purposes, should something go wrong with the property in the future.
How are electricians registered and regulated in New Zealand?
The Electrical Workers Registration Board administers the registration and licensing of electricians and “promotes safety for all New Zealanders by ensuring the competence of electrical workers.”
Electricians are required to be registered and have an annual practicing license, which is proof that your electrician is qualified to do electrical work safely.
See the regulations governing electrical work in New Zealand in detail at WorkSafe.

Troubleshooting Hot Water Cylinder Issues
My hot water temperature is colder than usual. What’s the problem?
A drop in temperature or fluctuating temperature of your hot water is usually a problem with your electric hot water cylinder. This can be caused by the tempering valve on top of the cylinder not functioning correctly. This can be fixed easily. Or it could be a thermostat or element problem. If it’s an old cylinder it may need to be replaced.
Who do I contact a plumber or an electrician?
Call an electrician first if the water temperature is dropping or fluctuating. Over the phone, we can often determine whether the fault is an electrical or plumbing issue. It is likely that both a plumber and electrician will need to be involved in the job.
What if my electric hot water cylinder is leaking?
Call a plumber immediately so that you can prevent any flooding and get the issue diagnosed quickly.
Hot water cylinder repair and replacements involve an electrician and a plumber but who does what?
Plumber - will advise you if your cylinder needs replacing, source a new cylinder and parts for you, and install them.
Electrician - can advise you if the element or thermostat needs to be replaced, is needed to disconnect the old element or thermostat and connect in the new ones.
How long does it take to do a cylinder replacement?
The job takes 3 to 4 hours. Most of the time is taken in emptying the tank of water before the old element and cylinder are removed and the replacements have been installed. Once installed, we will fill the cylinder, complete installation of the element and thermostat and test it.
How much does it cost to replace a hot water cylinder?
Installing a new electric hot water cylinder costs approximately $2,000-$3,000. Running costs for an average three-person household range from $560-$1,000 a year, depending on electricity rates – such as a night tariff being available.
How long does a hot water cylinder last?
If fitted to a high standard a hot water cylinder should last over 30 years.
What about instant hot water units? Who can help me with that installation?
A plumber can source a unit for you and will take care of the gas connection for the installation. An electrician installs the outside power outlet for it.
