There are a wide range of established industry and trade associations for Australia professionals including architects, engineers, surveyors, builders and designers – and product associations that help to take the risk out of sourcing materials to underpin the high quality and hassle-free delivery of projects and services. 

What is an industry association?

Industry associations are generally not-for-profit organisations. They work to support the development and sustainability of an industry by acting as a collective voice for those involved in it, protecting their rights and advancing their interests. Association members will share knowledge and information, discuss any arising or potential issues, and set rules and standards for industry best practice. 

They may also offer mentoring programmes, training and support and carry out lobbying activities to influence government policies.

What are the benefits of joining an industry association?

Industry associations offer networking opportunities, keep members abreast of developments and innovations in their sector, and of industry best practice. Clients and other contractors will place added value on and trust in designers, engineers, surveyors and builders who are members of recognised industry associations.  

Gaining membership of a recognised association will likely add a degree of credibility to a business and its employees as it proves that strict criteria have been met, and that the appropriate qualifications are held.

Most well regarded industry associations provide ongoing professional development programmes, of which members must take part to ensure ongoing accreditation by, and membership of that association.

Can anyone join an industry association?

Associations will often have criteria that must be met, including qualifications, currency in the industry and other specific requirements. Memberships will normally cost and may be reviewed annually or at other intervals. 

What is a product association?

Much like industry associations, product associations relate to the actual material or product rather than the person providing the service or skill. Think, AU Pine Manufacturers Association, Australia Fibrous Plaster Association, AU Readymixed Concrete Association, Precast AU Inc. These organisations exist to champion quality and transparency of products in different categories.
