Set on an elevated site in Riverton, this compact two-bedroom holiday home is designed to capture expansive views across farmland to the ocean beyond. Drawing on the language of the traditional Southland crib, the simple gabled form is expressed through a refined palette of distressed galvanised corrugate and vertical cedar. A central living pavilion anchors the plan, with bedrooms positioned at either end to provide privacy and balance. Floor-to-ceiling glazing frames the outlook and fills the interior with natural light, while distinctive window forms add architectural interest. Open-plan living extends seamlessly to a deck and outdoor entertaining area, while raking plywood ceilings with negative detailing enhance the sense of space within the compact footprint. Modest in scale yet strong in character, Aparima Retreat offers a contemporary coastal retreat grounded in its Southland setting.

Professional Reviews

“We had Matt Anderson-Stewart of MAS Architecture design our home in Otatara. Throughout the entire design process, we found Matt to be extremely professional, efficient and responsive. Matt was very meticulous in his planning and worked to our brief whilst enhancing our vision for what we wanted. Matt would always listen to our ideas, research the materials and advise on what options were best suited. Our site came with a few challenges, of which Matt would engage in further research and was extremely co-operative with liaising with local council. Matt designed our home that is not only great to live in, but aesthetically pleasing with a creative edge. As a result of Matt’s architectural touch, along with our builder, we have a home which we are absolutely thrilled with and adore! We would recommend Matt to anyone looking to foresee an architectural project and would definitely use him again if we embarked on another project.”
