It's impossible not to make a mess when you're preparing a fabulous dinner party. But do you really want everyone to see this as they gather round the island for a drink before dinner?
The Southland chef who owns this new house found a way around the problem – have two kitchens, one at the front and one at the back.
Garry Hull of Paddock 186 in Waimatuku near Riverton had the opportunity to design the perfect kitchen when his original home burned down to the ground in a disastrous fire.
KEY DESIGN POINTS FROM THIS PROJECT
- If you have the space and the budget, and love entertaining, a second kitchen is a great way to contain the clutter while giving you all the space you need to cater to a crowd.
- A little whimsy goes a long way. In this kitchen, there's the coloured LED lighting. Plus, the owner has chosen a "tangled" light fixture that complements the wire sculptures of a man and a dog. It's a bit of fun and a conversation piece.
- Have everything you need right where you need it. While the large refrigerator in this set-up is in the second kitchen, albeit near the door, there is another refrigerator drawer within the island.
- Monochromatic looks have been the key trend for kitchens this year, and it's probably because they are a classic that will always look good.
