Blending seamlessly into the streetscape with its contemporary design and mesmerising natural aesthetic, the Derby project embraces naturally weathering materials and maximises passive solar principles. At the core of the design are raw materials, such as feature rammed earth walls, concrete flooring, plywood ceiling claddings, reclaimed bricks from the house that previously occupied the site and the raw external timber cladding.
The long length of the house provides a strong connection with the surrounding outdoor spaces. The entry starts at the front boundary by walking through an open garden and arriving at a front door which is actually a screen to the outdoor living area. From this informal entry the long portion of the house opens up to living spaces at ground level. Each space has direct access to the garden. A double storey sleeping pavilion contains 3 bedrooms and bathroom. This pavilion has access to the garden without having to go through the living areas.
Internally, a textured, natural aesthetic has been created through a meticulously considered materiality palette that is heavily informed by the external finishes of the home. This creates a harmonious connection between the two, which is especially important as the home was designed to have all spaces visually connected to the external garden.
