This expressive garden in Essendon responds to a suburban setting, where attentive restoration of the original dwellings facade and considered architectural detailing informed the landscape approach. The brief was to create a garden that felt resolved and timeless, a garden that would sit comfortably alongside the home while offering a series of calm, functional outdoor spaces for daily use and quiet retreat. The garden acts as a key contributor to the character of this property while enhancing its street presence and sense of arrival. The planting strategy centers on layered greens, leaf structure, and a restrained material palette to establish a sense of enclosure and softness throughout the site. An existing Pyrus tree forms the heart of the composition, its established canopy retained and celebrated. A trio of advanced Brachychiton rupestris (Queensland Bottle trees) were introduced to balance the Pyrus and frame the dwelling. The rear garden is conceived as a lush extension of the interior, with planting softening the home’s strong linear forms. Viewed through expansive glazing, layered greenery becomes the dominant visual element, creating a constant dialogue between inside and out.
