The 2011 Christchurch earthquake took a heavy toll on the Lyttelton Fire Station. Sitting on a geological crest, significant seismic damage was sustained that required the volunteer fire station to be demolished.
This development comprised a brand new 2 bay fire station on the existing site with supporting operational, amenities and training facilities.
This project posed significant geotechnical challenges as well as unlocking archaeological layers of Lyttelton’s historical past. With varying ground conditions, the appliance bay is separated from the main body of the station through seismic separation to ensure uninterrupted vehicle access at all times.
The result is a station empathetic with its historical surroundings, past heritage and in keeping with the town’s scales and vernacular aesthetic architecture.
