House for Five banner

280 sqm / Grey Lynn, Auckland

This is a family house in a leafy inner city heritage neighbourhood where new houses are controlled by strict planning controls. Formally the house makes a contextual response to its neighbouring bungalows, typically 90-110 year old wooden bungalows and villas originating from colonial England.

The house is clad in a rain screen of white cement panels with a combination of fixed and mobile screens – some of them shading the western sun from living and sleeping spaces as well as providing privacy from the street. The pattern of the screens has been abstracted from the Victorian fretwork decoration of villas in the area.

Richard Naish founded RTA Studio in 1999 after a successful career with top practices in London and Auckland. We are a practice that focuses on delivering exceptional design with a considered and personal service. Our work aims to make a lasting contribution to the urban and natural context by challenging, provoking and delighting.

Our studio is constantly working within the realms of public, commercial and urban design as well as sensitive residential projects. We are committed to a sustainable built environment and are at the forefront developing carbon neutral buildings.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
