SPACE were the Architects entrusted with the task of designing a new interior fitout for the Visitor Information Centre and i-Site in Paraparaumu for Kapiti Coast District Council.

The solution had to combine the design aesthetic, functionality and technological requirements of the tenant, Nature Coast, with very challenging budgetary and construction timing constraints typical of an interior fitout of this nature. The aesthetic for the fitout was inspired by the Kapiti Coast’s natural environment, the Tararua ranges through to Kapiti Island and all there is to offer between.

The idea of a river winding it’s way down from the ranges through native forest making its way to the coast, connecting the mountains with the sea and on to Kapiti Island is what SPACE Architecture based the design upon. The flooring conveys the flow of the river, and the modulated rhythm of native timber in the reception counter further enhances the theme.

The result is a sense of movement and welcoming flow through the Information Centre with a feeling of warmth, light and openness to all visitors.
