Project team
Continuing the tradition of refurbishment of Auckland’s heritage housing stock, this project is a re-interpretation of the ‘lean-to’ form. Traditionally used as service spaces, the ‘lean-to’ here is re-cast as living space, opening the house up to the north facing back yard.
The existing house, while tidy, lacked connection to its surroundings. The original veranda had been enclosed, blocking views of the neighbourhood and Waitakere Ranges. Lean-to additions at the rear housed a galley kitchen and narrow dining area with limited outdoor access. The neighbouring properties also raised privacy concerns.
Intending to create a home for a professional couple with two children, blending work and family life the design contrasted old and new elements, enhancing the existing floor plan with larger rooms, more bedrooms, and a spacious home office, while restoring original kauri flooring and details. The veranda was reinstated, reconnecting the home to the street. At the rear, lean-to additions were replaced by a modern link containing a laundry and scullery. The living area features a battened ceiling and high windows for privacy, light, and ventilation. Materials and colours contrast traditional and contemporary styles, while native plantings extend the garden’s connection to the home.
