Mangawhai Home

New Home Build Total Recall Nostalgic memories of bach-life as youngsters inspired the owners to recreate that same enchanted bach idyll feel for their own children, and provide a northern escape from the big smoke of Auckland. The holiday home’s open-plan bach is all about indoor-outdoor flow. Open the 6m bifold doors onto the 50sqm deck and to the lush grass, ready for the children to play. There are two bedrooms and a bathroom at each end of the house, so two families can stay at once, coming together for communal life in the middle living zone, but also having their own space as and when needed. A structural masterpiece, the low-maintenance house is well-insulated and built to lock-up-and-leave. Although leaving the easy-care kitchen would be hard. The holiday vibe is reinforced with its birch plywood cabinetry, soft-close doors and drawers, and low-fi drilled-and-cut finger holes. A huge 3.2m engineered stone island means everyone can be involved in prepping for barbecues. Memories are made of this.
