Marina Point, Fiji banner

Like arriving at a resort, the design principle was set up to be a journey, entering through a gate house and walking along a boardwalk to your accomodation and entertainment spaces with views through the landscape and buildings across the pool to the ocean.

Mass was positioned in the walls and in the roof to prevent thermal overloading and also to make the buildings secure in cyclones

The building elements were isolated aesthetically, so you could read the solid plastered concrete walls from the traditional timber roof and ceiling structures, isolated by the negative detailed concrete tie beams.

Separate bures for the different spacial functions (living, sleeping, guests, children/adult) provide privacy, and a resort like feel reminiscent of the resorts on the outlying islands

DESIGN BRIEF

  • A holiday home that feels like a resort
  • Separate bure’s for separate functions
  • 2 families to share the buildings
  • Traditional aesthetic with modern construction
  • Secure

Young Architects is a New Zealand based design studio. Established in 2003 by Greg Young, their work is predominantly homes in the coastal hills of Christchurch, but they also work throughout the South Pacific, and further afield in North America and Asia.

Young Architects focus is on designing buildings that are appropriate for their environment, have a classic aesthetic, and are cost effective to construct. Preferred mediums are natural palettes, predominantly in timber.

Greg is an architect member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, and a professional member of Architectural Designers New Zealand, and has been involved in award winning projects for both organisations.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
