A sustainable cottage garden in Cooks Hill, completed in 2017, featuring recycled materials, raised beds, and a family-friendly design that maximizes space and sunlight for a warm, inviting outdoor retreat.
One small, stark inner city backyard, two young children, a mum and a dad keen to grow fresh veggies for the family and find a quiet spot to kick back in the sun, a modest budget, and a passion for sustainability.
Challenge accepted.
Sometimes limited choice can be a beautiful thing, and that’s certainly true for this design.
Raised garden beds constructed from recycled railway sleepers make the most of a northerly aspect. Recycled bricks form a generous curve of seating perfectly placed to soak up the sun and create an attractive focal point. Bright red chillies and vibrant purple basil spill out of a recycled-timber green wall that increases the planting area while providing privacy. A generous lawn using the existing turf flows from the back of the house, inviting a myriad or possibilities for play.
