Years spent living abroad in a number of different homes, in New York and Hong Kong, had our clients yearning for a joyful home that would feel uniquely theirs, where they could settle with their three children.

Our canvas was a former worker’s cottage, which had been renovated into a much larger home by architect Sam Crawford several years before. Our clients wanted their home to reflect their experiences travelling and passion for art and entertaining, so we were engaged to inject colour and add layers to get the most out of each space. The result is a home which is truly bespoke.

We opened up the adjoining dining and living areas by removing a block of timber joinery between them. Both look onto the new kitchen, which is a feast of colour and materiality, combining Verde Guatemala marble, glazed off-white Moroccan tiles and a burl veneer. This richness and warmth, is echoed in the furnishings, with jewel toned rugs and artworks bringing a joyful energy.

All this colour and movement is balanced by a shade of creamy pink nougat applied to the oak joinery, that takes on a journey throughout the house, reappearing on walls and in the ensuite where it anchors the strong blend of materials – the burl veneer of the vanity, and the pinky purple vein of Calacatta Viola marble.

Our client gave us free reign to embrace colour and pattern in the bedrooms, and the fabric choices on the bedheads reflect this, adding to the richly characterful atmosphere of this home. The end result is far more than the sum of each space. Our clients have landed in a home which reflects and unifies them, while adding joy to their day to day lives.

About the
Professional

Arent&Pyke is a Sydney-based design practice, formed by Juliette Arent and Sarah-Jane Pyke, encompassing interior architecture and design with a unique focus on the decorative arts.

Since the formation of the practice in 2007 Arent&Pyke have fine tuned their philosophy around what it means to make a space sing. While they have created a multi-award winning practice and earnt the respect of their industry peers, the value they bring remains in the emotional connections they create and how those, in turn, drive aesthetic and practical decisions.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
