By Castlepeake Architects
The steeply sloping site provided the opportunity to take advantage of northern views to an inlet of Middle Harbour. The house is divided both vertically and horizontally by function, as a way of providing a well-defined facade to the street, and allowing differing views and experiences from within the building. The strong central alignment begins at the stone clad garage, accessed off the street, with a pool and private elevated lawn above. The master bedroom dramatically cantilevers out over the pool, with an upper-level deck located above, accessing expansive views and creating a feeling of openness off the main living space. To the rear of the upper level a much needed connection to the ground plane is provided to the south side of the house, accessed off a secondary living space and providing views to established vegetation. Vertical circulation is contained to the western side of the house in the form of a stacked stairwell and lift, expressed as a separate form to the habitable rooms adjacent.
