In Melbourne's Thornbury, Solace by Ma-Kan Design offers an interesting perspective on contemporary residential design, where natural materials and precise architectural detailing work together to create a home that feels both warm and distinctly modern.
The material palette is deliberately limited, but far from monotonous. Pale timber brings warmth and texture, while an extraordinary stone island introduces sweeping natural veining and movement. Soft upholstery, sculptural furniture and carefully placed lighting add further layers, without competing for attention.
What makes the project particularly interesting is the introduction of stainless steel. Rather than continuing the warmth of the surrounding materials with brass or bronze, Ma-Kan Design has opted for a cooler, more architectural finish.
Castella's Stream Handle in Stainless Steel features throughout the kitchen, butler's pantry, bedroom and wardrobes. Its clean, slender form provides a striking contrast to the organic character of the timber and stone, introducing a sense of precision that balances the softness of the interior.
The handles also demonstrate how proportion and placement can change the way hardware is experienced. Used horizontally and vertically across different cabinetry applications, Stream becomes part of the architectural composition, particularly in the dressing room, where its repetition emphasises the scale and rhythm of the joinery.
Solace is a reminder that creating a sense of warmth doesn't require every material to be warm, just as achieving simplicity doesn't mean eliminating contrast. Sometimes it's the tension between opposing elements that makes a space feel complete.
