Living tiny often means getting creative with space, especially when it comes to accessing loft areas. Standard staircases can consume valuable square footage and dominate a room visually. In a recent tour of her beautiful Magnolia model tiny home at Village Farm Austin, Angela shared her journey of replacing bulky, "oppressive" stairs with a stylish and functional solution: the Bcompact folding ladder.
The Problem: Big Stairs in a Tiny Space
Angela describes the original stairs that came with her tiny home as "big, giant, beefy metal" structures. In a carefully curated small space where aesthetics matter immensely, these stairs felt out of place and visually heavy. Like many tiny home dwellers, Angela sought a solution that wasn't just functional but also beautiful. She hated the original stairs and knew there had to be a better way.
The Search for "Beautiful Folding Stairs"
Determined to find an alternative, Angela turned to the internet. Her specific Google search for "beautiful folding stairs" eventually led her down a rabbit hole that culminated in discovering Bcompact. Despite the company being based in Australia, Angela found them "amazing" and "so helpful" when she contacted them.
The Solution: Bcompact's Innovative Design
What Angela found, and enthusiastically demonstrated, was exactly what she was looking for – stairs that double as art. The Bcompact ladder system features:
Using the Bcompact Ladder
Angela points out an important usage note: while they look like stairs, they function like a ladder. This means climbing up facing forward but descending backward, ensuring safety.
A Perfect Fit for Tiny Living
For Angela, the Bcompact ladder system was the perfect solution to replace stairs she actively disliked. It addressed both the functional need for loft access and her desire for beautiful design elements within her tiny home. By transforming the staircase from an oppressive metal structure into elegant, foldable wall art, Bcompact helped enhance the livability and aesthetic of her Magnolia tiny home. Her experience showcases how innovative products like these can solve common challenges faced in small-space living.

Bianchi Compact. Bamboo Compact. Being Compact.
Bcompact was founded by Zev Bianchi, an industrial designer from Sydney, Australia. Zev first conceptualised and designed the now iconic folding staircase in the early 2000's and finally brought it to life as a prototype in 2013. After being awarded design patents and winning numerous international awards, the folding staircase shot to fame in a viral video that was seen over 130 million times. Bcompact now ships both the folding staircase and the folding ladder globally.
All of this may have not been possible without Zev's discovery of Bamboo. A strong, beautiful and highly sustainable material, Bamboo allowed for the creation of the folding staircase and ladder and also awakened Zev to the potential bamboo had to tackle many environmental challenges, especially climate change. Along with his wife, Sandra, Zev now runs Bcompact, splitting his time between designing new space creating products and advocating for the use and growth of bamboo globally.
