South Coogee House.

The design aim for this project was to create a modern Australian home in a contemporary beachside style. A beautiful, practical home suitable for family living. A house with uplifting interiors (private & open spaces) that take full advantage of the coastal views and property surrounds.

The architectural strategy for this house stems from the historic ‘bathing machines’ of the mid-1880s; their pride and privacy, their local identity, and how this can evolve into contemporary architecture. The pitched roof & vertical timber cladding– a nod to these old bathing houses. The use of stone & the charring of the timber – a direct response to the local landscape/surrounds.

It was important in the design process for this house that we listened to our clients carefully about how they would use the home, as a family, and the style of interiors that would best represent them. The result of this – clean/modern/traditional and rustic interiors (all at once).

Recycled bricks (22,000 to be exact) from the original house create a central exposed brick wall, exposed timber trusses line the ceiling, expansive concrete floors contrast with warm timbers – large bi-fold glazed doors and windows frame the expansive views, sunny nooks to sit/play/rest in are on offer alongside large open living spaces to gather in. A family home, a beachside retreat and a house that sits perfectly within its neighbourhood.
