The Storybook Garden.

This garden was conceived as part of a complete site transformation, accompanying the construction of a new storybook inspired home and designed to feel settled, characterful and entirely at ease in its surroundings. From the outset, the intention was to create a landscape that felt as though it had evolved over decades rather than being newly made, with materials, structure and planting working together to suggest history and permanence.

A reclaimed bluestone laneway forms the spine of the design, using original blocks from the property to retain a tangible link to the site’s past. Set within this path is a bespoke water rill that glides quietly along its centre, introducing movement and sound while guiding visitors through the garden. This interplay between stone and water establishes a gentle rhythm that carries through the landscape.

At the rear, the garden opens to a pool precinct enclosed by a finely detailed timber dropper and copper rail fence, chosen for its craftsmanship and patina as it ages. Newly sawn bluestone paving wraps the house, pool and rear boundary, visually connecting these areas while harmonising with the reclaimed stone used elsewhere on site.

The layout is anchored by a central lawn framed with abundant romantic planting, creating softness and seasonal variation around a calm green core. Just beyond, a paved terrace forms a secondary outdoor room with space for a firepit, offering a place to gather that feels both intimate and grounded within the garden.

Layered planting throughout completes the composition, enveloping the structure in foliage and bloom so that the entire landscape reads as one cohesive, storybook setting shaped by time, craft and intention.
