Rabobank Centre, the first building to be completed in the Union Square development. “Five commercial buildings and a car parking structure will form the overall development, which is half a city block on the south side of Hamilton,” says Sam Thomas of Chow:Hill Architects.
It’s an ideal location, says Sam. “Waikato Regional Theatre is being built not too far away, and it's adjacent to Hood Street, which is Hamilton’s social area with bars and restaurants.”
The fluted panels are precast concrete.
The exterior louvres are functional, carefully allowing natural light into the building's office spaces.

“We’re applying some really good sustainable design principles. For example, we have rainwater harvesting, a warm roof system and high performance glazing,” says Sam.

“The intent was to give the lobby and courtyard a bit of a laneway aesthetic. That’s why we’ve got the small herringbone paver tiles, running through that precast concrete from outside, and it’s glazed to have a visual link and natural light coming into that space.”
The corner site where Rabobank Centre now stands was once a Holden car showroom.
