State of Kin was engaged to create a dream kitchen within the newly opened-up space of a renovated character home. With a new extension (by others) the footprint of the existing home was cleared and expanded to form a generous footprint and blank canvas. The brief was to reference a mid-century flavour within a contemporary extension of a character home, this space is the central hub of the home and dream space and their young family.

A vast central island forms a gathering point for the home – a spot for casual dining, for large-scale meal preparation and serving guests, and window servery open to the alfresco, connecting internally to external. Space under the stair becomes clever pantry storage, with a combination of open shelves and glass doors framed in timber following the angle of the stair overhead. Combining powder blue with chocolate and concrete-grey with warm timber offset with graphic tiling, the palette is bold and playful, contemporary but a little bit retro. Mosaic tiles with square profiles but varied sizes and textures provide a graphic check-pattern set adjacent to the linear pattern of vertically ribbed glass and timber battens. Forms are softened with curved edges and rounded corners, a dedicated coffee nook is almost shrine-like, a softly illuminated ode to caffeine.
