Drawing inspiration from the vernacular red shed across the Pungapunga River, Waipapa is a family beach retreat that blends seamlessly into its rural setting. With westerly views over the river to rolling hills, it contrasts with the white sands and surf of Whangapoua Beach, just a short walk away. The house features two distinct zones under a split gable roof, living spaces to the north clad in a dark-stained cedar and sleeping quarters to the south that are sheltered in scoria-red corrugated metal. Large overhangs, cedar under-slatted roofing, and electronic screens regulate temperature and create outdoor living areas on both sides. Interior and exterior materials merge, with kwila floors, meranti, and dark cedar reaching lofty heights in the living areas. Built-in cabinetry offers cozy spots for reading or extra sleeping space, and the sheltered outdoor room with a BBQ and steel fireplace is perfect for year-round enjoyment, embracing the best of Kiwi living.
