Acoustics transforms car park into architecturally designed sports bar

Located on Sydney’s picturesque South Coast, Kiama Leagues Club is a drawcard destination for locals and tourists alike. In 2022, the Club began expanding its footprint, building the new Cedar Cutters Sports Bar to service its growing community.
Designed by EMVY Design and built by Pearce and Percy Constructions, the Cedar Cutters Sports Bar demonstrates how Screenwood’s acoustic range PANELS empower greater architectural vision while ensuring patrons’ comfort.
Screenwood has collaborated with some of the world’s leading commercial interior architects and designers for almost two decades, enhancing interiors with its innovative acoustic solutions.
“Our architectural acoustic innovations empower even the most complex commercial interiors,” says Cameron Nelson, Managing Director of Screenwood.

A builder by trade, Nelson founded Screenwood in 2005 after recognising the potential for a certified, prefabricated linear timber system that is cost-effective and easy to install.
“We launched PANELS within the first twelve months of operation, and we’re extremely proud that it continues to inspire and empower prominent interior architects, designers, and builders across projects, both grand and intimate in scale,” says Nelson.
Kiama Leagues Club reimagined
The design brief for Kiama Leagues Club's new venue, Cedar Cutters Sports Bar, was to transform a car park and storeroom into a new habitable environment with various eating and entertaining areas.
“Our design vision was adventurous, and we sought to create a uniquely vibrant space that ignites conversations in comfort,” says Carley Austin, Director of EMVY Design.
“To achieve this, we blended a palette of traditional soft and opulent colours and materials with the space’s industrial elements. We used an exposed salmon ceiling, Italian marble mosaics, and rose bronze beer fonts to enhance the ambience.”
Acoustics was at the forefront of the design as residential areas and other hospitality venues surround the Cedar Cutters Sports Bar. “While the Sports Bar encourages vibrancy in volume, we needed acoustic materials that could absorb sound, create warmth, and complement our industrial materials,” continues Austin.
Cedar Cutters Sports Bar’s main areas have floor-to-ceiling screen zones to view sporting events and draw patrons in. “It was essential to contain the noise within these zones and control direct sound and reverberation throughout,” says Austin.
An adventurous design with crucial acoustic objectives
EMVY Design selected Screenwood acoustic PANELS in solid timber for the ceiling and foyer bulkheads to control reverberation and improve speech intelligibility. The decorative pre-finished Screenwood MODULO tongue-and-groove linear lining boards were also chosen to add interest to walls, columns and seating.
“Visually, Screenwood PANELS and MODULO<sup> </sup>create a warm palette which can only be achieved with a natural product like timber,” says Austin. “We liked how the profiles integrate with each other and the range of finishes available.”
Austin continues, “We specifically chose Screenwood PANELS as they offer an aesthetic and practical appeal and because of their fire and acoustic properties. Their ease of installation and ability to integrate our LED linear lighting systems also played a decisive factor in finalising the specification of Screenwood products.”

World’s first acoustic wallpaper
The Kiama Leagues Club project follows Screenwood’s recent launch of the world’s first perforated architectural acoustic wallpaper, which was designed to improve the design and acoustic comfort of interior spaces.
According to Nelson, Screenwood’s innovative addition, SOUNDLINA, was meticulously designed and crafted to empower architectural vision with less effort and cost.
