Clearing the air about diesel boilers: the new, greener heating option

The technology around diesel burners has come a long way in the last few years and the new cost-efficient, low emission diesel boilers provide another option to consider when choosing home heating solutions.

“We’ve been installing diesel boilers for nearly 20 years and we tried numerous options before we came across the Grant boilers. Nothing we have installed or worked on to date has come anywhere close to the Grant range,” Warm NZ’s Sean Stephens says.

After two decades in the market, Warm NZ have now moved to only working with Grant’s Vortex range because of their superior offerings compared to other diesel boilers on the market. “Diesel is a really cost effective option compared to LPG, with running costs around 50 per cent less than LPG. And with the newest technology incorporated, there are extremely low emissions; they are clean and green.”

These diesel boilers are known as condensing boilers, and offer heat output ranging from 12kW up to 70kW. Designed in the UK for houses lacking in the space that many New Zealand homes enjoy led to a sleek design in the interior ranges that are similar in look to a dishwasher and can be easily fitted into a kitchen or laundry area.

“Here, though, we generally install the boilers at the rear of the garage, but because they’re so quiet and clean, they can easily be installed in kitchen areas if there is limited space,” Stephens says. “The sleek white finish means they’re suitable for various spaces and aren’t cumbersome or noisy. You can’t even hear these boilers running.”

Unlike traditional diesel boilers, Grant Vortex condensing boilers all incorporate a built-in stainless steel heat exchanger which has a turbulator system that cools the gases to a point where the latent heat, normally lost to the atmosphere through the flue, can be usefully extracted. “The additional energy recovered enables the boiler to operate continuously at much higher efficiency levels, resulting in lower heating and hot water running costs.

“This takes the technology one step further creating a much cleaner and sustainable heating option,” Stephens says. “Condensing boilers were already efficient but this latest technology makes them much more advanced.”

Diesel boilers are also available for exterior solutions, and work in the same way as the interior boilers.
