How Does Floor Heating Maintain a Consistent Temperature?

While there are so many new and amazing options with the electric and hydronic floor heating systems that can revolutionise the comfort and convenience you enjoy at home, it’s still important to pay attention to the finer details of these systems, including temperature consistency. Not only is maintaining a consistent temperature important for comfort, it’s also important for energy-efficiency, which is an important aspect of any home heating system.

There are two main varieties of radiant underfloor heating systems — electric and hydronic underfloor heating systems, which are available in options such as under-tile heating, under-carpet heating, in-screed heating, ultra-thin heating and in-slab heating.

For most homeowners, hydronic underfloor heating (which uses a pipe network to circulate hot water beneath the floor surface) is the most energy-efficient of the two options. These systems provide a consistent heat throughout by slowly radiating heat into the interior space. This is more energy-efficient (and healthier for residents) than blowing heated air around the room as traditional ducted heating systems do. What’s more, as this effect more closely resembles natural heat transfer, it’s also more comfortable.

Floor sensor or air sensor thermostat ?

Whether electric or hydronic, radiant heated floors rely on sensors to maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout interior spaces. These can be either air sensors or floor sensors, with some systems employing a combination of the two? So, which is better?

Most heated floor specialists agree that floor sensors are the better choice over air sensors for reasons which include safety, energy-efficiency and effectiveness. Here are some of the reasons why a radiant underfloor heating system complete with a quality thermostat and floor sensor is the right choice for your home:

• Floor sensor thermostats ensure the floor is never overheated. Air sensors help to keep the room at the desired temperature but they’re not effective at keeping the floor at the correct temperature.

• Floor sensors are more energy efficient.

As floor sensors detect temperature across the entire floor surface and ensure it’s kept at a consistent temperature and never overheated, the entire system operates energy-efficiently and helps to minimise your household’s overall energy consumption and carbon footprint.

At Comfort Heat, our underfloor heating systems feature flush-mounted thermostats with a quality floor sensor to maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout your home.
