In the provision of architecture services, the design process is typically linear, starting with an overall conception of the project and working through to the detailed aspects and implementation.
However, how long does the design process take? The design process can also be a creative and unpredictable process, as architects seek the best fit solution to a range of different issues in order to bring them together into a cohesive whole.
At our practice, we prioritise understanding as much about the project as possible before beginning the design process. We consider key requirements such as orientation, regulations, client needs, and budgets as overlapping layers on the project.
As we develop design ideas, we try to find a strategy that best fits these issues. Through this process, forms, shapes, and materiality emerge and inform the design solution. Ultimately, the design process should result in a resolved response to the project’s issues, but as architects, we also aim to create emotionally resonant spaces through the use of natural light, materials, scale, and atmosphere.
By taking this extra step, we hope to create buildings that have a presence in the urban environment and a positive impact on the people who occupy them.
