The Hawke’s Bay building company dedicated to strong relationships and project efficiency

“Over the years we have been able to create great long-lasting relationships with many subcontractors – we have each learned how the others’ business operates, exactly what information they require from us and vice versa. This enables us to work efficiently together and therefore helps us to continue to secure reliable subcontractors who are able to jump in and get the job done at the high standard we pride ourselves on,” says Emily Brittin, co-owner of Brittin Builders.

With the building company’s high standard of work, the selection of sub-trades is based on their quality of workmanship – all involved must be dedicated to the same level of precision. If they have great communication skills and are reliable and solution-focused, the project will benefit by being completed on time, on budget and to a high standard.

“Having strong lines of communication with the subcontractors we work with means we can manage the coordination between all sub-trades, our building team and any other different trades, ensuring that all entities have sufficient information and warning about changes to the project. This improves the speed and efficiency of the build overall,” says Emily.

Brittin Builders’ operations manager will communicate directly with clients and liaise any changes to the subcontractors to prevent any delays and ensure the job continues to run smoothly.

“Our secret weapon is our exceptional communication manager who spends time making sure that all information is quickly and efficiently passed to all parties.”

At the commencement of the project, expectations are clearly communicated via a written document. Timelines are set with the subcontractor collaboratively and it is ensured that all specifications are on-site and easy to locate.

“There is always a lead builder on each project which means that both the subcontractor and the homeowner have a single point of contact to make sure that decisions are relayed to all members of both teams. This also means that sufficient times are given to plan their own work efficiently.”

On a recent project, the client had an alteration done with the intention of the area being used by paying guests. Completion of the project was critical to its success. The project has since been completed on time and on budget with the homeowner complementing the team both verbally and in writing for managing the project so successfully – a result achieved thanks to this impressive teamwork.

On completion of a job, the project will be reviewed with the trades to address any ongoing issues that have arisen so that solutions can be found.

“We also make time every few months to review any strategic issues that may be getting in the way of productivity,” says Emily. “It is important to realise that we need each other. Therefore, it is vital that we both have a solution-focused mindset. With this in place, most challenges can be overcome and relationships and trust are strengthened as a result. This produces a quality and time-efficient outcome for the homeowner ensuring value for money of the finished product.”
