Why you should hire an architect for your home renovation

The Karori Renovation saw Hark Architects transform a classic villa in Wellington into a bright, sunny family home.

However, beyond carefully curated mood boards and extensive Instagram perusing lies the actual reality—home renovations are a complicated journey. It requires a close eye for detail and the ability to balance aesthetics with structural integrity and functionality.

This is where the indispensable role of architects comes to light, offering what social media cannot. With extensive and expertly trained knowledge, five years at University, and then five years of work experience to become a registered architect, they help to streamline the process and ensure the design aligns with your vision, all whilst ensuring everything is up to code.

We spoke to Kate Harford, registered architect for Hark Architects, to discuss why their role is essential to a home renovation journey and how their expertise helps bring your dream to reality.

Woburn Villa was transformed by Hark Architects, adding a modern and warm extension at the rear of the house.

The old and new parts of Woburn Villa now blend seamlessly, creating a true sanctuary for the owners.

Trained to think both spatially and conceptually, architects apply a trained eye for home design, ensuring everything critical is noticed. With the ability to understand your demands through lifestyle choices and personal preferences, architects can bring these factors into a cohesive design. Their expertise can articulate your vision and bring it to life, all while applying space optimisation, functionality and aesthetics.

"Our expertise in design extends beyond sketching blueprints; it's about understanding clients' needs, priorities, and budgets. Our focus on great design adds value by enhancing daily life.”

“We prioritise client collaboration, embracing teamwork when coordinating a project to make our client's project come to life. Our already existing relationships with consultants, contractors and suppliers also help make this process simple and seamless,” explains Kate when talking about the beginnings of the renovation journey.

Home renovations don’t just revolve around fixing what’s broken or updating outdated aesthetics; it’s also about reimagining spaces that suit clients' ever-changing needs and lifestyles.

“Our role also goes beyond aesthetics; we alleviate stress by aiding decision-making, tackling builder queries, and negotiating costs. With a vast knowledge base covering every aspect of a project—from design to consent to construction—we ensure a seamless journey towards realising your vision."

The stunning Hinau Villa transformation involved repurposing spaces within the house to suit better the needs of the owner and an incredible extension into the backyard to bring a warm and light space for the family to enjoy nights under the stars.
