Our Approach
We work hard, here's how.
Proud Legacy
Our business is built on family values that are as strong today as when our founders George Haydn and George Rollett started the business. Integrity, hard work and lasting relationships continue to be our company’s foundation. What we do stands the test of time.
True client partnerships
Working together in a true partnership with our clients leads to shared success and great results. To achieve that, our partnership approach involves taking personal responsibility, being adaptable, and always looking to make a constructive contribution. We are focused on solutions rather than excuses; we believe a positive ‘can do’ attitude paves the way to top results.
Long-term relationships
We build long-term relationships with our clients. That starts with listening carefully to really understand the clients’ project vision. We deliver what we promise because transparency builds trust. The majority of our work is repeat business for satisfied clients; we’re proud of that.
Excellence through flexibility
We are committed to exceeding our clients’ expectations. That’s possible because we can access such a diverse range of construction services and procurement options; so whatever the client needs, we can provide an expert solution.
Valuing our people
Our business is our people. We look after not only our clients, but our employees, contractors and suppliers. We offer our employees high quality training programmes, the opportunity for further study and personal development opportunities and recognise and reward their commitment to Haydn & Rollett.
Health and safety
Our people are our business, so keeping them safe is crucial. We are committed to best practice on site and in the office. We also see health beyond site, we make sure our employees enjoy a healthy work-life balance and have the opportunity to spend quality time with their families.
Uncompromising quality
We have built our reputation on consistently delivering exceptional quality construction and client service. We plan meticulously, consult widely and pay attention to the detail. That way, we maintain the highest standards across our company, and we’re rewarded with repeat business.
Our History
For more than 70 years, we’ve been building New Zealand.
Humble beginnings
The two Georges, George Haydn and George Rollett, founded Haydn & Rollett Construction on the North Shore in 1946. Haydn was a Hungarian immigrant, an energetic, larger than life character. Rollett was the strong silent type, a Kiwi farmer’s son from ‘down south’. The two young builders may have been from opposite sides of the world and with different personalities, but they shared a passion for finely-crafted furniture, and quality, innovative construction.
We started with post war housing
Immediately after World War II demand was great for housing in Auckland. We quickly made a name for ourselves in the residential market. The company’s first factory was built on Barrys Point Road in 1950 and our first shop, La Rue, on Queen Street in 1953.
Fit-outs in the 60s and 70s
As demand for housing eased in the 60s, we moved into high quality shop, bank and office fit-outs. One of those was the iconic Leo O’Malley Menswear shop on Karangahape Road, which is still a going concern today.
Commercial and industrial expansion
During the 1980s, we expanded into commercial construction and industrial developments. Diana Court and Wairau Park Estate were built during this time; the company also fitted out many prestigious hotels and banks around Auckland, including the new Sheraton, and completed renovations of landmark heritage buildings such as the Old Custom House.
Going large
New century, new focus. In the 2000s, we expanded into large-scale projects beginning with the world- acclaimed Kauri Cliffs golf resort in Kerikeri. We also began an 8,000 m2. distribution centre for Carter Holt Harvey and a 50,000 m2 warehouse for Fonterra, in addition to retail developments in Whakatane and Hamilton.
We continue to evolve, completing design/build projects in the aged-care and student accommodation sectors as well as large scale, high quality residential projects. With our considerable expertise and dedication to quality, we’re regarded as one of the most stable and respected construction companies in Auckland.
Our Communities
We believe it’s vital to be part of the fabric of the communities where we live.
A strong sense of community
Haydn & Rollett started as a family-orientated company and whilst we’re bigger now, family values remain at the heart of who we are. We’re an integral part of the community, so it seems natural to us to support our people, our children and our community organisations. What started as donations to the sports teams of our employees’ children, has grown into significant ongoing relationships with local projects, schools and sports organisations.
Youth development
Our primary community focus is on children in sport. Participation in sport promotes teamwork, fair play and an active lifestyle and we want to encourage those values.
Skills and training
Our commitment to our local youth doesn’t end with sponsorship. Through our school relationships, we have introduced school-leavers to Haydn & Rollett’s comprehensive apprenticeship programme, promoting development of their personal and life skills.
Community events
We support our wider community too. We help with the running of community events and fundraisers for schools and children’s charities. We’ve also supported the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust and Ronald McDonald Foundation.
The arts
Our founder George Haydn was passionate about the arts and Haydn & Rollett has supported numerous arts projects. We were instrumental in establishing the Lake House Arts Centre, a studio for artists to create and promote their work. We also built, repaired and maintain the historic Frank Sargeson House in Takapuna, where this much-admired and successful New Zealand writer lived and worked until his death in 1982.
Our Commitment
Our goal is always to have zero harm for our staff and minimal impact on our natural environment.
Taking care of our environment
Within our own business and on the construction of any new building or development, our goal is always to have zero or minimal impact on our natural environment.
Thinking environmentally is part of the Haydn & Rollett culture; we encourage and support this in our day-to-day operations, and our people take personal responsibility for ‘keeping it green”. Our business management complies with all legislation, codes and standards and we’re vigilant about minimising waste and managing resources to be as efficient as we can.
That’s all great, and others may claim the same, but our “proof of the pudding” is there for all to see in our buildings. We don’t simply comply with legislation and codes because we must, we go beyond, designing and building environmentally sustainable (ESD) and Green Star rated buildings that optimise efficiency through storm water re-use, power savings, air conditioning design, insulation and glass selection to reduce air conditioning loadings. To us, maximising environmental sustainability is a matter of pride and a hallmark of many of our developments.
A safe workplace
At Haydn & Rollett we understand that a safe workplace not only protects our team it produces a good site culture that benefits our people and projects as a whole. Our safety culture extends to all parties involved in our construction projects, from clients to subcontractors and additional tradespeople onsite. Our people are constantly being up skilled and reminded about the importance and practical management of safety in the workplace. By encouraging 3rd party and independent auditing of our construction sites and systems we test ourselves against industry standards and established codes of practice.
We pride ourselves on an excellent health and safety record which reflects that the safety of our people is a core value in our company philosophy.
Services
Property Services
While you get on with managing your business, we can take care of the property maintenance, dealing with third party suppliers and building service providers. Our Property Services team simplifies the ongoing process of managing multiple service providers by becoming a single point of contact with an established reputation for delivering results on time and of a high quality.
We also know that over the life of a building, things will change. We can re-purpose buildings through renovations, extensions and interior fit-outs. Our strong heritage in fit-outs matches our name to some of the great landmarks in Auckland, including the Saatchi & Saatchi and Kiwirail buildings to name a few.
Joinery
These days, it’s a rare thing to find a construction company with its own joinery factory. But as others have wound down their joinery divisions, we’ve retained and nurtured our in-house team of highly skilled joiners and cabinetmakers, allowing us to take on special projects for clients, as well as maintain total quality control of the finishing in our construction work. In fact, we want to be first in mind for bespoke cabinetry and solid timber work in the Auckland market.
The key, of course, is quality. Our experienced joiners are true craftsmen, who make it a point of pride to deliver expertly finished product, whatever the scale of the job. Whether it’s a multi-million dollar commercial fit out, a residential kitchen, or a set of floating shelves for a home office, no detail is left to chance.
That versatility hinted at above is another real strength. The Haydn &Rollett team offers design and build services on projects ranging from small scale bespoke cabinetmaking and joinery, to entire kitchens and bathrooms, to commercial-scale fit outs.
