A Modern Take On The European Farmhouse, Australia

An elegant new build affectionately known as ‘Black Beauty’ on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula just outside of Melbourne, is the gorgeous home to Steve Cahill from Cahill Builders, his wife and three young children.

Steve and his wife Lucy wanted to create something special for the family and one that embraced the sea views and nearby beach surrounds.  Using the shell of the home as the foundation, the family engaged Kate Walker Designs to transform the basic and plain interiors after finding her work suited their aesthetic.

Kate took inspiration from the European farmhouse style of home while ensuring spatial decisions, colours and finishes were thoughtfully considered and the best quality to ensure a lasting result. The interiors incorporate colours in deep greens and teals offset by neutral tones along with plenty of texture.

The baby’s nursery makes use of the ceiling to creative affect with Mokum Peonia wallpaper, a soft and feminine floral that really works well on a large surface. Window treatments are stunningly designed by Lynch’s Window Fashions where Mokum Satori drapes were selected throughout the home and perfectly complemented the elements within each individual space.  Mokum Satori is a sumptuous and energetic, wide-width stonewashed linen woven in 100% linen, expertly stonewashed, then softly tumbled to create its perfectly dynamic handle.

For the bedrooms, deeper shades of Mokum Satori fabric in colours moss, petrol and ink were selected to create a moody feel and in the living space an earthy shade of Mokum Satori colour Linen was chosen to tie in with the other interior touches such as the cushions in James Dunlop Rowan - a woven polyester check that replicates a wool aesthetic.

“For Black Beauty, the fabrics were very important in terms of both colour and texture. The selection suited the warm tones of the European Farmhouse aesthetic. In fact, we chose the fabrics first and then selected the paint colours to complement the textures and tones. We love the density of the fabrics, that are not too sheer and add a soft strength to each space. The wallpaper on the ceiling adds a whimsical and playful element to the nursery whilst being in keeping with the elegance of the home” says Kate.

“The KWD design team has worked really closely with Anthony Lynch of Lynch’s Window Fashions on so many of our projects. He is our first choice when it comes to window coverings - we know we can rely on him 100% for his creative mind, his fabric selection, his design ideas, his workmanship and of course his first class customer service, says Kate Walker.

“We worked collaboratively with the KWD design team for the window treatments throughout Black Beauty. Kate pushes the creative boundaries when it comes to design, particularly with colour and texture. The Mokum textiles we selected for this project are designed to be both enduring and aesthetically pleasing” states Anthony Lynch owner of Lynch’s Window Fashions.

The Cahills were not afraid to be pushed outside their comfort zone and were extremely trusting of the designer’s vision, which has been executed most beautifully.

About the

We’ve developed a deep-seated knowledge of interior textiles in our 110-year history. We’re interested in different ways of living, and we’re constantly exploring what fabrics can bring to people’s lives. And life has always informed what we do.

We believe in fabrics that have a unique viewpoint, born from a curiosity about the world. Fabrics with a sense of purpose. Fabrics that are crafted with passion, and embrace the lives spent on and around them. Fabric that spans trends, generations and cultures. The fabric of life.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
