A bright refresh of an iconic 1960s Robin Boyd apartment, where classic Modernism meets the Centre Pompidou in contemporary South Yarra.
To retain essential character and spatial simplicity, the update of this beautiful apartment in the architecturally significant 1962 Domain Park Flats complex is a respectful and light-handed response.
Careful departures from and true reinstatements of Boyd’s design were necessary; a significant intervention transforms the entry experience, improving flow and creating a visual link to the treetops beyond, while a slight reduction in bathroom size allows for a more generous and user-friendly corridor.
An overall palette of subtle warmth is punctuated with the vivid orange of liberated pipework, a move that reinstates Boyd’s original proportions, answers statutory needs and brings a playful and deliberate nod to 1960s design.
