Designed for a family of four, the project involved the renovation of a heritage-listed terrace house. Importantly, our clients loved the original character and stories that were attached to the house, so protecting that was important.
A dilapidated 1980's extension was demolished and replaced to bring in more natural light, better building performance, more amenity, landscaped courtyards, and warm honest internal materials. A new, freestanding brick studio to the rear provided an additional guest room, painting studio, workshop and laundry.
The clients love for modernism and warm, indirect lighting informed our simple design intent — to build a free-standing studio out of brick; a contemporary architectural reflection of the surrounding neighbourhood’s character of brick sheds and garages. Stack bond recycled bricks form the skin of the building, with the entire construction in brickwork to reduce materials and streamline construction. No plasterboard was used.
We are proud to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land upon which Brick & Gable House stands. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture.

Our Approach
Breathe undertakes meaningful projects we can be proud of — those that align with our purpose and values.
Since we focus on maximising positive impact, many of our projects don’t fit the common definition of ‘architecture’.
We work to understand who we’re designing for. We strive to inspire, engage and support our clients and the broader communities we serve.
We prioritise social, environmental and economic sustainability in every project. We question the status quo to pursue outcomes that are informed by, and seek to better, those that came before.
Above all, we prioritise ethics along with aesthetics, and design without ego, to create the best outcomes for our clients and their communities.
